Governor Macquarie's Aboriginal Policy

To mark the bicentenary of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, the Heritage Council devoted the Winter 2010 issue of Heritage NSW to 'Celebrating Macquarie's Legacy'. Heritage Branch staff Patricia Hale & Tanya Koeneman interviewed academics Dr Grace Karskens and Dr Shayne Williams for their views on Governor Macquarie's Aboriginal policy and its impacts on Aboriginal people. A short article on Macquarie's Native Institution at Parramatta appeared in Heritage News, Winter 2010.

This longer article on Governor Macquarie's Aboriginal policy weaves the views of the two interviewees into a review of the historiography of Macquarie's Aboriginal policy. It offers a view of Macquarie that seeks to put first the Aboriginal experience of his governorship.
