Customs houses

MAP - NSW maritme heritage sites

Customs Houses were built to collect customs duties of items of cargo. They were important buildings in towns built for maritime trade and were designed by respected architects such as James Barnet. The Custom's Officer could sometimes also be the Pilot in the early days. The Newcastle Custom's House had a time ball fitted in 1877 and opened that year. The barque Jane Spiers was the first vessel cleared from it.
