Belah Shearers' Quarters, Gundabooka National Park (Image: Boris Hlavica/DECCW)Not far from Bourke you can step back in time and stay somewhere a little different at Gundabooka National Park.  Belah Shearers' Quarters was built in the mid 20th century to accommodate shearers when Gundabooka was a functioning sheep station.

Today this heritage accommodation features six bedrooms, a verandah, communal kitchen and eating area – the perfect set-up for getting to know your fellow guests. Accommodating up to twelve people, Belah Shearers' Quarters is also ideal for group bookings.

While still maintaining its historic charm, Belah Shearers' Quarters today offers modern facilities including electricity, air-conditioning and an amenities block with hot showers.

Getting there: Belah Shearers’ Quarters is on Corella Tank Road in the western part of Gundabooka National Park. Take the Kidman Highway from Bourke and turn right into the park. Belah Shearers’ Quarters is about 31km from the park entrance.

Road access: Unsealed road/trail - 2WD vehicles. Dry weather only.

Accommodation fees: $30 per person per night, up to a maximum of 12 people. This fee is capped after seven people. A discount applies for longer stays; only $15 per person per night from the third night onwards.

The wide enclosed verandahs offer secluded spots to relax with a book. With fishing, paddling and birdwatching options, there’s something for everyone. From here, take a day trip to explore the park. Be sure to check out the spectacular Aboriginal rock art at Mulgowan (Yappa) Aboriginal Art Site walking track.

In the evening, cook up a feast in the spacious kitchen or enjoy an easy barbecue outside. Then sit back, stoke up a fire, and enjoy a spectacular desert sky thick with stars.

Getting there: Redbank Homestead is in Gundabooka National Park. To get there:

  • Drive along Ben Lomond Road for approximately 19.5km and turn off onto Yanda track
  • Continue for approximately 29km and turn left onto Louth/Bourke Road
  • It’s approximately 7km to the turn off and another 1km to the homestead

Road access: Unsealed road/trail - 2WD vehicles. Dry weather only.

Facilities: picnic tables, fire rings (bring your own firewood), electric power
