Barooga picnic area, set beside the mighty Murray River is a great place for a day out.
The picnic area is a short walk from either Cobram or Barooga and is well equipped with barbecues and picnic tables. After a tasty barbecue lunch you could take a peaceful walk along the river or enjoy a cooling dip. If you’ve brought your fishing rod along, you can try your luck at a spot of fishing. For those interested in local history, it’s also the site of the river punt, constructed in 1889 to carry people and animals across the river.
Which ever way you choose to spend your time, you’re bound to find Barooga picnic area a delightful place to while away the afternoon with family and friends.

Getting there: Barooga picnic area is in the Barooga precinct of Murray Valley National Park. To get there, make your way to Cobram and then follow Vermont Street towards Barooga. Take the first right after crossing the Murray from Cobram, and follow the track towards the river bank.

Benarca campground

With the hum of cicadas and corellas and the majestic Australian river red gums, it’s hard not to feel immersed in nature at Benarca campground.
This free Murray Valley Regional Park campground offers impressive views of the Murray River from your tent, campervan or caravan site and offers plenty to keep everyone busy and having fun. Enjoy a walk along the river, bike ride or spot of birdwatching and for those who don’t mind getting their feet wet, there’s paddling, fishing and swimming. It’s dog-friendly, so you’re four-legged friends are welcome to join in on the family camping trip.
The town of Moama is nearby, so it’s easy to pop in for an evening meal or to pick up some supplies. You’ll also find museums and galleries, and it’s the place to book a trip along the Murray on a paddle steamer.

Getting there: Benarca campground is in the Benarca precinct of Murray Valley Regional Park. To get there take Perricoota Road from the Cobb Highway at Moama. Travel along Perricoota Road for about 15km (it becomes Moama-Barnham Road), then turn left into Benarca Forest Road. You’ll see the sign for Benarca a few hundred metres along Benarca Forest Road.

Edward River Bridge campground

Set on the picturesque Edward River in Murray Valley Regional Park, Edward River Bridge campground is bush camping at its best.
It’s a great choice for a family camping holiday; it’s dog-friendly, free and suitable for caravans, motorhomes and tents. There is plenty to keep everyone happy; go for an energising walk on the Gulpa Creek track or relax with a book under the shade of a river red gum. If you’ve brought your fishing gear along there are plenty of great spots to cast your line along the river and some good places for swimming, not to mention opportunities to paddle and bike ride.
Remember to bring your binoculars, this part of the park is great for birdwatching – head to Reed Beds bird hide for the best opportunities to see migratory birds.
The town of Mathoura isn’t far away if you need to pick up some camping supplies or want to start the day reading the paper over a cappuccino.

Whether you’re camping out in the adjacent campground, or taking a daytrip from Deniliquin or Moama, Edwards River Bridge picnic area is a great place to stop for a barbecue lunch.
Equipped with picnic tables and free barbecues, the picnic area is set beside the majestic river red gums for which Murray Valley Regional Park is known. There’s room for kids to run around and you can even bring your dog along to enjoy the fun.
When you’ve polished off your picnic lunch, there’s a lot more to explore; go for a walk or ride the Gulpa Creek track, bring your canoe or kayak along for a spot of paddling or head to Reed Beds bird hide for a spot of birdwatching. And don’t forget to bring your fishing rod along; there are lots of great spots to drop a line.

Moama campground, or 5 Mile as it is known by locals, is a popular campground set on the banks of the mighty Murray River.
There is a boat ramp at the campground, as well as opportunities for fishing, swimming and paddling, so it’s perfect for waterbabies looking to camp out for the night or longer. It’s suitable for caravans and motorhomes and is a dog-friendly campground.
If you’re into boat racing, head to 5 Mile in February; it’s the perfect vantage point to watch the annual Southern 80 boat race. And if you’re a fishing enthusiast, you haven’t been forgotten. The width of the river here makes this place a picturesque setting to cast a line, with anglers descending on the campground in March for the RSL Fishing Classic.

Getting there: Moama campground is in the Moama Precinct of Murray Valley Regional Park. To get there take Perricoota Road from the Cobb Highway at Moama. Travel along Perricoota Road for about 8km and turn towards the Murray River.

Mulwala campground
Mulwala campground, also known as Hinches Beach offering free campsites for caravans, motorhomes and tents, is perfectly positioned next to the mighty Murray River in Murray Valley Regional Park.
It’s a popular place for family campers, with many groups returning to camp each year; you can even bring your dog along. There’s lots of space to play games and run around, and there’s plenty more to explore on your holidays.
You can explore the park on foot or on your bike or paddle the river in a kayak or canoe. Be sure to bring your fishing rod along – it’s a great spot to cast a line and in the warmer weather, the river is a good place to cool off.
The towns of Yarrawonga and Mulwala aren’t far away if you need to pick up some supplies or want to take in the sights.

Getting there: Mulwala campground is in the Mulwala Precinct of Murray Valley Regional Park. To get there:
- Make your way to the Mulwala Canal Bridge
- Turn left immediately at the signpost Tocumwal, Berrigan, Savernake
- Travel 1.4km and turn left at the crossroads, after about 5km you’ll cross Mulwala Canal
- At the Mulwala sign turn left, and the left at Hinches Beach

Quicks Beach campground
With the Murray River at your front door, and the magnificent river red gums in your backyard, Quicks Beach campground is only 3.5km from the centre of Barooga. There are plenty of sites for caravans, camper trailers, motorhomes and tents, so how ever you travel, you're bound to find a bush camp that suits you in Murray Valley National Park.
Take your fishing gear and your swimmers – the river is perfect for dropping in a line and the grassy campground rolls down to a sandy beach where the kids can build a sandcastle or two. It’s also a good spot for some paddling.

Getting there: Quicks Beach is in the Cottadidda precinct of Murray Valley National Park.
If you’re travelling from the south, travel to Cobram and then Barooga:
- Cross the bridge over the Murray River, and travel 2.5km along Vermont Street
- Turn right into Hughes Street and then right onto Quicks Road
- Follow the track towards the river bank, it's about 300m to the campground
To get there from the north, travel to Barooga town centre:
- Turn left into Hughes Street about 2.5km before the bridge
- Turn right onto Quicks Road and into the park
- Follow the track towards the river bank it's about 300m to the campground

Willoughby's Beach campground

Willoughby’s Beach is a free camping area in Murray Valley Regional Park on the Edward River at Deniliquin.
It’s suitable for tents, caravans and motorhomes, and you can even bring your dog along. There’s a sealed track that meanders along the Edward River to nearby McLean’s Beach in town, so you can easily wander into Deniliquin for a coffee and to collect the daily paper.
There’s plenty to do in the park – try your hand at a spot of fishing and be sure to bring your bikes along to explore the park's trails.

Getting there: Willoughby’s Beach is in the Deniliquin precinct of Murray Valley Regional Park. To get there take Memorial Drive from the Island Sanctuary, you’ll find Willoughby’s Beach 200m to the left inside Murray Valley Regional Park.

Woperana campground
If you’re looking to get off the beaten track, head to Woperana campground in Murray Valley National Park.
This free campground is only accessible during dry weather and it’s best to take a 4WD. It’s one of the remote camping areas in the park, and with space for only three to four camps at a time, you’re bound to enjoy the solitude.
It’s a great place to enjoy a spot of fishing or kayaking, and it’s definitely a wonderfully serene place to relax.

Getting there: Woperana campground is in the Woperana precinct of Murray Valley National Park. To get there take the Lower River Road towards the west of Tocumwal for about 6km.
