Picnics, Barbecues and Cafes

Picnic and barbecue facilities are available at a number of sites within the park. Gas BBQs are provided free of charge. No fires are permitted within Munmorah State Conservation Area.

It doesn’t get much better than this. Pack the hamper and enjoy a long, leisurely barbecue lunch with friends and family in the beautiful surrounds of Munmorah State Conservation Area.

Spread your picnic blanket by the shore or set up at one of the picnic tables on the grassy expanse and take in the tranquil views over the sparkling sand and calm blue waters of Elizabeth Bay. It’s a great place for a swim on a hot day.

If you’re keen to get out on the water, you can launch your boat from the ramp here too – be sure to pack the fishing gear.

Getting there: From Lake Munmorah, follow Elizabeth Bay Drive for 2km and turn right at the second roundabout.

Frazer Beach, Munmorah State Conservation Area (Image: OEH)What better way to start the day than with a short walk on the beach and a refreshing swim in the ocean before you head back to your camp for a leisurely breakfast?

Just 50m from Frazer Beach, this intimate campground is set in a peaceful, protected pocket of the Frazer valley and boasts beautiful coastal views.

Frazer campground is a great base for fishing, diving, surfing and walking, and Frazer beach is a popular spot for swimming – it’s patrolled during the Christmas and Easter school holidays. Though if you're after a more chilled escape, there’s always the lagoon, where you can take a dip and the kids can play safely in the calm waters.

Getting there: Frazer campground is located at Frazer Park in Munmorah State Conservation Area.
                                   
From the northern entry of Munmorah State Conservation Area:

  • Follow Blue Wren Drive from Pacific Highway, Wybung (no right-turn from the south) and then turn left into Birdie Beach Road.
  • Turn right into Campbell Drive, then right onto Frazer Beach Road and follow to the end.


From the southern entry of Munmorah State Conservation Area:

  • Follow Birdie Beach Drive from Elizabeth Bay Drive, Lake Munmorah, and turn right onto Campbell Drive.
  • Turn right onto Frazer Beach Road and follow to the end

Road access: Sealed road - 2WD vehicles.

Opening hours: Munmorah State Conservation Area is open 6am to 6pm from April to September and 5.30am to 9pm during daylight savings (call the area office on (02) 4972 9000 for exact dates). A private security firm provides an emergency opening service after hours – call (02) 4940 7788. Fees apply and are payable at the time of call-out.

Facilities: picnic tables, gas/electric barbecues (free), flush toilets, cold showers

Water supply: Bore water is available, but campers should bring their own drinking water

Camping fees: 2 adults $28 per night. Additional adults $14 per night and additional children (5-15 years) $7 per night. Infants 0-4 years free.

Other fees: Park entrance fees: $7 per vehicle per day.

Not permitted here:

  • Dogs.
  • Solid fuel fires.

Birdie Beach, Munmorah State Conservation Area (Image: David Benson/OEH)Get the whole family together for a relaxing camping escape on the beautiful central coast of NSW.

Set in the heart of Munmorah State Conservation Area and nestled in bushland, this grassy, landscaped campground has ample space with designated sites for caravans and trailers as well as spots for tent camping. Many sites are shaded by the branches of established trees, and there are covered barbecue areas. The long, sandy stretch of Birdie Beach is just a short walk from the campground – a leisurely walk along the beach is a great start to the day.

Fantastic fishing and surfing spots as well as bushwalks are also close at hand. And if you’re there during the winter months, you might just see whales as they make their way along the coast.

From the northern entry of Munmorah State Conservation Area:

  • Follow Blue Wren Drive from Pacific Highway, Wybung (no right-turn from the south) and turn left into Birdie Beach Drive.
  • After about 0.6km, you'll see the campground entry on your left.

From the southern entry of Munmorah State Conservation Area:

  • Follow Birdie Beach Drive from Elizabeth Bay Drive, Lake Munmorah, for 2km, and the entrance to the campground will be on your left.

Closure

Currently portable toilets only and no drinking water at Freemans Camping Area

Due to a broken water main the toilets and showers are not functioning at Freemans Camping Area. Portable toilets are on site for visitor use. An outdoor cold shower is available at Birdie Beach carpark.  Note there is no drinking water available at Freemans Camping area.  Water is available at nearby Birdie Beach and Tea Tree Picnic Area, but it is recommended that you bring your own drinking water.

We apologise for any inconvience and will have repairs undertaken as a matter of urgency.

Palms picnic area

While away a couple of hours in this shady, secluded Munmorah haven. With cabbage tree palms enclosing the area, it’s a peaceful and intimate setting for a barbecue or picnic.

Before you settle in, or after you’ve lunched, why not explore the surrounding rainforest with an amble along the pretty Palms circuit track? The short loop walk starts and finishes right here at the picnic area.

Free gas barbecues and several picnic tables add to the appeal of this delightfully positioned picnic spot.

  • Follow Blue Wren Drive and turn left onto Campbell Drive
  • Turn right onto Frazer Beach Road, after about 300m you’ll see a small carpark on the left

From the southern entry of Munmorah State Conservation Area:

  • Follow Birdie Beach Road and turn left onto Blue Wren Drive
  • Turn right onto Campbell Drive, then right onto Frazer Beach Road follow for 300m
  • There is a small carpark on the left

Tea Tree picnic area and lookout

Tea Tree Lookout, overlooking Bird Island Nature Reserve, Munmorah State Conservation Area (Image: David Benson/OEH)Keen surfers will appreciate the sweeping views from the lookout at Tea Tree picnic area. Inspect the waves and then decide whether to head down to the boardwalk and paddle out or have a relaxed barbie while you wait for the conditions to change.

During winter, the lookout is an excellent spot to station yourself with the binoculars and spot whales passing by on their epic migration. You can even record your sighting online.

Tea trees surround a quiet picnic area where there are free gas barbecues and picnic tables.

  • Follow Blue Wren Drive
  • Turn left onto Birdie Beach Road and continue for 2km before turning right into the picnic area

From the southern entry of Munmorah State Conservation Area, follow Birdie Beach Road for 2km before turning right into the picnic area

Opening hours: Munmorah State Conservation Area is open between 5.30am and 9pm (daylight savings time), and 5.30am to 6pm (other times).
