Historic Huts Restoration and Maintenance

NPWS staff and Grey Mare Hut caretakers, Brindabella Ski Club members position the new chimney frame (Image: Craig Smith/OEH)The Kosciuszko Huts Association (KHA) has been involved in the rebuilding, maintenance and restoration of huts since its formation in 1971. Many huts within Kosciuszko National Park have working parties which undertake maintenance and repairs.  Members of the KHA have also undertaken an enormous amount of work documenting historic heritage associated with many huts and hut sites.

If you are interested in being involved in the KHA visit their website for more details: http://www.khuts.org/

Difficulty levels for the activities range from very easy to strenuous, depending on the projects.

Hunting Hawkweed - Search and Destroy

The vivid flowers of Orange Hawkweed, a noxious weed that infests parts of Kosciuszko National Park (Image: Jo Caldwell/OEH)Come along and assist in the hunt for the Class 1 Noxious Weed, Orange Hawkweed, in the Jagungal Wilderness Area of Kosciuszko National Park. We need people to help us find this weed so we can eradicate it.

No previous experience is required, and you will be trained in surveying techniques, GPS use and plant identification. You'll see some of the most spectacular views in this area of the park, 'cause Orange Hawkweed likes good views.

Safety
First aid kits will be provided, as well as emergency briefings and weather forecasts for the week.

Accommodation
Shared accommodation is provided in one of two houses, in Khancoban. Bedding, linen and towels are supplied. Each volunteer will have their own room, but bathroom and living facilities are shared.

Food
Basic food supplies for breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided by the NPWS, but you'll prepare your own meals.

Transport
NPWS will provide 4WD transport from Khancoban to the survey sites.

Note: You need to be reasonably physically fit to participate, as you'll be walking in scenic and remote locations through tussock grassland and open heath. There'll be some uneven ground and unmarked tracks, natural creek crossings and walking up, down and across some slopes to get to search areas (gentle slopes).
