Mulgowan (Yappa) Aboriginal Art Site walking track
For an Outback adventure that’s bound to inspire, head for Mulgowan (Yappa) Aboriginal Art site walking track in Gunabooka National Park, near Bourke. Be amazed by the fascinating Aboriginal rock art of the Ngemba and Paakandji people, set amongst unspoilt bushland. It’s an unforgettable ‘off the beaten track’ experience for all ages.
Following the medium difficulty walking track along gentle hills, you might see hooded robins and pink cockatoos. Arriving at the imposing rock overhang, you’ll discover unique rock paintings that not only depict animal motifs, but also male and female dancers. The surrounding Gundabooka range is a significant place where ceremonies were held and echoes of a vibrant culture can still be felt.
Take your time to soak up the tranquil setting before retracing your steps. If you’re keen to explore, try Bennetts Gorge picnic area walk or pitch your tent beneath the vast desert sky at Dry Tank campground or Yanda campground.
Bennetts Gorge picnic area walk
Bennets Gorge picnic area walk, also known as the Valley of the Eagles walk, is an easy 1km stroll that starts from Bennets Gorge picnic area. This short and easy walk will take you to the base of Mount Gunderbooka, it’s well-signed and suitable for all fitness levels.
Tread quietly while you walk – you’re likely to see and hear a range of birdlife on this lovely walk in Gundabooka National Park; if you’re lucky you might see a pink cockatoo.
Mulareenya Creek Art Site Track
This return walk leads from the Mulgowan car park to Mulareenya Creek, where you can see Aboriginal rock art.

Little Mountain Track
This walking track leads through mulga woodlands from the Dry Tank Visitor Area to nearby Little Mountain. From the summit, there's an outstanding view of the entire northern escarpment of the Gunderbooka Range.
