Wheelchair facilities

The following areas in the park are suitable for wheelchairs. We have assessed each facility's difficulty of access for an average wheelchair user:

  • Easy: Access is free of obstacles such as steps, rough terrain or significant slopes, and may have ramps or boardwalks.
  • Medium: Access presents some minor difficulties, such as a grassy surface. However, you should be able to get around without assistance.
  • Hard: Access is via steps or a steep slope, or you'll have to move across a rough surface (with potholes, tree roots, rocks and/or similar obstacles). Assistance will be necessary.

Lane Cove River Tourist Park - caravan park (206 sites)

If you’ve never been camping before, My First Time Camping is a great way to start. All you need to do is bring a sleeping bag, a pillow, and a sense of adventure. We’ll provide a tent, camp stretchers, plus a table and chairs, which makes this the perfect introduction to an outdoor playground.

The campground itself is very well-equipped, featuring a swimming pool and paddling pool. Cook up your meals in the campground kitchen or on one of a number of electric barbecues, while the kids enjoy a spot of footie.

Getting there: Lane Cove River Tourist Park is a short 20-minute drive from the centre of Sydney and is located on Plassey Road, Macquarie Park. To get there, make your way to Delhi Road, Macquarie Park, and turn into Plassey Road, just east of North Ryde train station.

Carter Creek picnic area

Surrounded by native bushland and has clear views of the river, you can spread out a picnic blanket on the grass or set up on one of the shaded picnic tables. The children have space to play while the adults relax and prepare the feast. After lunch if you feel like stretching your legs, you can take stroll along the Riverside walk.

Carter Creek picnic area accommodates up to 200 people, so it’s a great option for large group events and celebrations. You will need to book though, either online or by contacting the park office.

Getting there: Carter Creek picnic area is on Riverside Drive in the south western part of Lane Cove National Park. Access to Riverside Drive is via Delhi Road at West Chatswood or Lane Cove Road at Ryde.

Road access: Sealed road - 2WD vehicles.

Commandment Rock picnic area

Commandment Rock picnic area in Lane Cove National Park (Image: Lane Cove River Touris Park/DECCW)In 1866 Commandment Rock was home to a family who had a small vegetable and strawberry farm. Now, the flat rock and wide stretch of grass is a popular place to picnic or meet up for a barbecue.

The grounds are so vast you can always find a secluded spot and there’s ample room to throw the frisbee or play hide and seek.

If you’re looking for a peaceful sanctuary surrounded by plenty of native shrubs and trees to celebrate a special occasion, why not book the area? The picnic area has a capacity of 350 people.

Haynes Flat picnic area (site 32)

There is a large shelter, picnic tables but no benches. The site is suited for a marquee and corporate groups.

Illoura picnic area (site 4)

This large riverside picnic area has scattered tables providing covered seating for up to 12 people and uncovered seating for up to 68 people beside a flat, grassy area overlooking the river.

Jenkins Hill picnic area

Picnic tables at Jenkins Hill picnic area can accommodate a wheelchair and the toilet is wheelchair accessible.

Jenkins Hill picnic area is located close to the Lane Cove River and weir. There’s a children’s playground that the kids are bound to enjoy and you’ll find picnic tables dotted around the area.

It’s a great place to laze the afternoon away after a tasty picnic or barbecue lunch. Lie back on the grass, gazing up among the trees above and you’ll be sure to spy a lorikeet or two and perhaps a kookaburra. If you’re feeling more energetic, you could bring your canoe or kayak for a spot of paddling along the river. Keep your eyes out for spoonbills wading through the water.

Getting there: Jenkins Hill picnic area is on the eastern side of Lane Cove River. To get there, take Fullers Road from the Pacific Highway and turn right into Lady Game Drive just before crossing the bridge. Look for the park entry gates on your left.

Moola picnic area

A picnic table at Moola picnic area can accommodate a wheelchair and there are wheelchair accessible toilets.

The sounds of the birds singing from trees that rustle with the wind, it won’t take you long to relax at this scenic spot right next to the Lane Cove River.

Moola picnic area is one of the park’s most popular places, there are plenty of facilities, including wood and electric barbecues and you can pick up an ice-cream or cold drink from the boatshed kiosk.

Once you’ve enjoyed your picnic or barbecue lunch, you can head off along the Riverside walk to explore the bushland of Lane Cove National Park. If you’d like to travel by water and you didn’t bring your own vessel, it’s easy to hire a row boat, canoe or pedal boat from the Lane Cove Boatshed.
