Newcastle Community Consultative Committee on the Environment
The Newcastle Community Consultative Committee on the Environment was established by the Minister for the Environment in 2011. It enables people living in the Newcastle Local Government Area to identify important environmental and amenity issues associated with nearby industrial activities. It also helps local industry understand the community's concerns.
This committee advises on establishing the proposed Lower Hunter environmental monitoring network. It also advises the Minister on any other existing, new or emerging environmental issues and on how the community wishes to be notified and kept informed in the event of an environmental incident.
The committee is comprised of nine members:
Chair
John Tate show profile
John is the proprietor of a local automotive industry company and has extensive experience in small business. John has been a Councillor for the City of Newcastle since 1980 and has held the popularly elected position of Lord Mayor of Newcastle since 1999. He is also the Deputy Chair of Regional Development Australia, Hunter.
Minister's community representative
Paul McBain show profile
Paul works as a forest scientist and has a long history of working with community and industry in the forest arena. He is the secretary of the Islington Village Community Group and is an active member of the Throsby Village Alliance.
Community representatives
Keith Craig show profile
Keith is a chemical engineer working in the water industry and has represented the Stockton community through various community forums. He is a member of the Stockton Community Action Group (SCAG).
Kate Johnson show profile
A resident of Stockton, Kate is a TAFE teacher specialising in social work and community development. She is currently interim Chair of the Stockton Community Action Group (SCAG).
Environmental representative
Zoe Rogers show profile
Zoe is an environmental scientist currently working as an environmental consultant and professional development training provider. A long-term resident of Newcastle, she is an active member of Climate Action Newcastle and on the Board of the Wilderness Society Newcastle Inc.
Industry representatives
Graham Woods show profile
Graham has extensive manufacturing and environmental management experience in petrochemicals, chemicals, explosives and mining services. He is currently employed by Incitec Pivot Ltd as the Global Health Safety and Environment Risk Manager.
Paul Thomas show profile
Paul is currently the Corporate Manager – Environment for Onesteel and has extensive experience in managing environmental and safety issues at industrial sites throughout Australia.
Nick Godfrey-Smithshow profile
Nick has worked in various environmental roles within industry and government for over 18 years. Currently he works for Port Waratah Coal Services as the Specialist Advisor, Environment.
Newcastle City Council representative
Adam Gilligan show profile
Adam is Compliance Services Manager at the City of Newcastle and has extensive experience in environmental health and regulation. He also acts as the council’s alternate local emergency management officer.
Expressions of interest for membership of the committee were sought from the community and industry. The committee membership was chosen to represent a broad range of views to ensure a balanced approach and open and honest dialogue between members of industry, government and community that will influence positive environmental outcomes for Newcastle.
