Sustaining our environment

Publishing info

The Airwatch program is an initiative of the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA). It provides leadership in the Government's commitment to improving air quality.

The EPA endeavours to:

  • develop environmental policies and the necessary strategies needed to put them into practice
  • regulate environmental standards for the protection and enhancement of the environment
  • provide information and education on environmental issues.

The EPA administers the following legislation in relation to air: Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 and Ozone Protection Act 1989.

The NSW Government is taking a leading role in ensuring that air quality is protected and enhanced. It has released Action for Air, a 25 year Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP) which is a whole of government approach, outlining guidelines and detailing strategies designed to maintain and enhance air quality. The AQMP covers all major sources of air pollution which contribute to photochemical smog. There is a comprehensive range of strategies which include setting targets to reduce growth in motor vehicle use, the development of an integrated transport plan and guidelines for hazard reduction burning.

Airwatch was piloted in 15 NSW schools in Sydney and the Illawarra, using a model developed in Western Australia. After evaluation it was reworked by Ross Tanswell of Kanahooka High School.

Coordinated by Helen Scott and Sue Cunningham (EPA) and Kerry Cooper.
