Working with councils

The Beachwatch Partnership Program was started in 2004 to help councils monitor and report on their beaches.

Each September, all coastal councils are invited to take part in the program. Council is required to fully fund the program (collect and analyse samples) and we provide:

  • quality assurance
  • program design assistance
  • data management assistance
  • sample media releases
  • weekly star ratings on the OEH website
  • inclusion in the annual State of the Beaches report

Training for councils

A one-day course was held in September 2013. Topics included: the national guidelines; pathogens and indicator bacteria; sanitary inspections; water quality monitoring; beach water quality reporting; management and incident response plans; and an algal expert from the Department of Water gave a presentation. The training was well attended with over 50 participants from 32 NSW Councils and a number of state government agencies

Feedback was very positive and we are pleased that the vast majority of participants found the course interesting and informative.
