Future of Environmental Education in NSW
Since 1994, education has consistently been rated as one of the more important initiatives the government can undertake to protect or improve the environment.
Learning for Sustainability 2007-10 recognises the importance of education in enabling NSW to promote environmental wellbeing.
Representatives from all levels of government, educational institutions, professional environmental education bodies, community and private sectors have worked together to develop one of the world's most comprehensive and detailed environmental education plans.
Learning for Sustainability 2007-10 builds on the achievements and understandings of previous NSW Government environmental education initiatives, including the initial Learning for Sustainability Plan which was launched in 2002.
It confirms NSW as a leader in providing environmental education for the whole community. The strategies outlined by the Plan will be delivered through partnerships and networks across all sectors, making it accessible throughout NSW.

What does the Plan aim to achieve?
The Plan strives to build the capacity of the whole community to move purposefully towards a sustainable future. It is guided by the vision to achieve
effective and integrated environmental education that builds the capacity of the people of NSW to be informed and active participants in moving society towards sustainability
The Plan provides the framework for a strategic and comprehensive cross-sectoral approach to environmental education in NSW. It addresses priority environmental themes through a number of complementary programs that will serve to:

reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the environmental, social and economic costs of climate change

promote water conservation through urban and regional catchment-based water cycle management

and promote innovative urban planning, green design techniques and environmentally-friendly transport alternatives, among other important initiatives.
