Programs
DECC's sustainability education programs include the following:
- Airwatch - a comprehensive resource for secondary students about the factors affecting the quality of our air.
- Active for Air - a learning program for primary school students designed to improve both their health and the quality of the air around them.
- Down to Earth manual introduces waste-saving techniques with case studies and step-by-step guides to setting up a compost heap, worm farm and a no-dig garden.
- Earth Works is a community-based education program, which teaches people to make waste minimisation a part of their daily lives.
- Stormwater: Everyone's Responsibility Every Day - a comprehensive web based school stormwater teaching guide, integrated into HSIE Stage 2 and Stage 5 Geography curriculum.
DECC also works on research to support the development of sustainability education programs, including:
- Who Cares about the Environment in 2006? shows that people believe education to be the most valuable first step the government can take towards protecting the environment.
- Educating the Community About Litter: Changing Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviour 2000 to 2003 presents the development and impacts of the NSW Government's 2000 to 2003 litter education program in the context of earlier litter education programs and existing research into litter and disposal behaviour.
- Patches of Green - a review of early childhood environmental education in Australia.
