Nandewar Bioregion assessment and project reports
The region
The Nandewar Bioregion lies in northern NSW and across the Queensland border. The bioregion is bound by the North Coast, New England Tablelands and the Brigalow Belt South bioregions in the south, east and west respectively. It includes the towns of Inverell and Tamworth, Quirindi, Bingara, Barraba, Manilla and Bendemeer.
The Peel, Macdonald, McIntyre, Namoi, Severn and Gwydir Rivers traverse the region, forming the MacIntyre, Gwydir and Namoi catchments.
In NSW the Bioregion covers 2 070 000 hectares and occupies 2.6% of the state
Nandewar Project Reports
In 1999 the NSW Government initiated a western regional assessment (focusing on the Brigalow and Nandewar regions) to guide future planning and encourage partnerships to protect the environment. The assessment of the Brigalow Belt South ran from 1999 to 2002. The Nandewar assessment commenced in 2003 and was completed in 2004. Projects included fauna and vegetation surveys, wood resources inventory, geology, minerals exploration potential, socioeconomic studies, and Aboriginal heritage and community consultation.
The resources, maps, figures and data assembled from the Nandewar and Brigalow assessments have assisted the development of a whole-of-Government approach to land use and natural resource management.
