Sustainable government

State government agencies and state-owned corporations buy various goods and services for their operations and capital works. The NSW Government aims to lead by example by incorporating waste minimisation and resource recovery principles into its business practices.

DECC guides purchasing and resource use by government agencies towards achieving more efficient use of resources and minimising the environmental impacts of waste more sustainable practices through the Waste Reduction and Purchasing Policy (WRAPP).

Each NSW government agency and state owned corporation must report to DECC every two years on their recycling and purchasing activities. WRAPP requires agencies to give priority to buying materials with recycled content where they are cost and performance competitive, and reduce the amount of waste they generate.

DECC supports WRAPP through education of agency officers and the development of ‘greenbuy’ information on the government’s online procurement system.
