Extension and integration of New England sustainability strategy
Grant: $50,000
The New England sustainability strategy (NESS) is a whole of community governance model and approach to sustainability: bringing together the wide array of stakeholders to identify their shared vision for the New England to be sustainable, the strategies to achieve this vision, and the measures to assess performance and progress. At the same time as completing NESS, strategic opportunities for priority actions and initiatives will be undertaken to implement the strategy, including the development of a replicable model to integrate NESS and other similar plans with local government planning, management and reporting systems.
Fairfield City Council
Sustainable Fairfield Council action plan
Grant: $20,000
This project will develop a sustainability action plan to move Fairfield City Council towards sustainability. The project aims to create a culture of sustainability within Council and establish Council as a model of sustainable organisational practices. This journey will begin by utilising the LGMA sustainability health check to assess corporate systems, strategic planning and operations and activities. The process will be run by LGMA facilitators in partnership with trained internal project team. The learnings and actions that arise from this project will be integrated into the City Management Plan and directly translate into sustainable outcomes for the community.
Griffith City Council
Development of Griffith sustainable environment strategy
Grant: $19,000
The Griffith sustainable environment strategy is a plan to identify the current state of Griffith's local environment and the actions required to achieve a sustainable environment within the Griffith local government area. Council has endorsed seven themes to focus on within the strategy. These themes include atmosphere, biodiversity, energy, health, land, waste and water. The NSW LGMA sustainability health check will be used to incorporate the themes and provide baseline information in the creation of the sustainable environment strategy. The strategy will enable Council to take on a stewardship role in integrating sustainability throughout the organisation and wider community.
Holroyd City Council
Living sustainably, living Holroyd
Grant: $20,000
'Living sustainably, living Holroyd' is working towards the development of a community strategic plan which will help define and shape Holroyd City's future. Using community engagement strategies, Holroyd will work to identify key sustainability priorities. The project will propose to undertake a comprehensive consultation process with the community in order to begin the formulation of a long-term vision for the sustainable development for the city's future. The project will also provide council with the opportunity to assess its current awareness of sustainability principles and support awareness for staff and the community to inform future social, economic and environmental decision-making.
Kogarah Council
Kogarah Council's environmental sustainability plan
Grant: $12,450
Kogarah Council has an emphasis on protecting the natural environment and encouraging sustainability. However, past projects have tended to spread throughout the Council and previous attempts to bring together achievements have failed due to the silo effect. An overarching plan will be developed to serve as the foundation to Council's environmental sustainability approach. The plan will also provide connectivity that will allow the integration of sustainability into current practices. Council will rethink its approach, learn from past mistakes and successes and be challenged to change. A more structured framework for environmental initiatives will be adopted and will incorporate views of Council's entire operations, community and major stakeholders.
Parkes Shire Council
Partners: Blayney Shire Council, Cabonne Council, Forbes Shire Council, Lachlan Shire Council, Weddin Shire Council and Wellington Council
NetWaste central subregion sustainability plan
Grant: $50,000
NetWaste is a voluntary regional waste group with 28 member councils divided into 4 subregions. Sustainability plans have been identified by NetWaste councils as a key driver for change in meeting the future challenges of our region across the quadruple bottom line, however the majority lack the resources and expertise to develop such plans. It is intended to take the councils in the Central Subregion through the process of developing a subregional sustainability plan using the BOD Environmental Sustainability Plan as the starting framework. Other regional plans will also be reviewed. A model plan will be developed from this process which will be used to complete the remaining 3 subregional plans.
Parramatta City Council
Phase ll Council's EfS plan (environmental) - implementation, promotion and final review
Grant: $20,000
Phase II of Council's EfS - environmental plan will focus on delivering and improving the draft EfS plan. This project will identify and support the most innovative and feasible community driven activities which tackle local environmental issues such as adaptation to climate change, waste and energy avoidance and reuse, environmental rehabilitation and other local pollution issues. This support will involve Council providing training to participants of chosen pilot programs. The results of these programs will be used to inform and improve council's draft EfS - environmental plan. Such an approach will provide not only tailored solutions to local environmental problems but will also empower communities by providing tailored training and support.
Port Macquarie Hastings Council
Port Macquarie - Hastings journey to sustainable excellence
Grant: $20,000
Port Macquarie - Hastings journey to sustainable excellence project will ensure the future sustainability of the local government area by undertaking a strategic and integrated approach to planning, funding and reporting that addresses environmental stewardship and civic leadership considerations. Council will undertake a series of events/activities in the calendar year 2010 to enable Council, in partnership with our community, to create a 10 year delivery program to sustain the economic development, natural resource management and the well being of our region into the future.
Shore Regional Organisation of Councils
Partners: Manly Council, Mosman Council, Pittwater Council and Warringah Council
Integrating sustainability into a strategy for the SHOROC region
Grant: $50,000
This project aims to integrate sustainability into the SHOROC long term regional strategy (20-50 year) to accommodate various growth scenarios and address associated ecological, social and economic implications. Potential impacts include transport, infrastructure, pressure on natural areas and systems from intensified development, leisure and tourism. Focus on sustainability in this high level regional strategic framework will ensure the region's significant natural assets, social capital and economic capacity are governed in an integrated way. This will be achieved through collaborative planning processes to integrate existing and future council's plans, integrate reporting, implementation and sustainability indicators.
Sutherland Shire Council
Sutherland Shire Council environmental sustainability strategy
Grant: $14,090
As part of its drive toward a more sustainable future, Sutherland Shire Council prepared a draft environmental strategy in 2008 to help it to better plan, integrate and deliver actions across the organisation and the local community to improve, protect and conserve the environment. This project seeks to build on this strategy to guide Council and community on a path to sustainability. Using a multi-faceted and robust consultation approach, Council will engage all key stakeholders in the development of a detailed sustainability plan.
