Our Preschool "Going Green"

Macquarie Hills Community Preschool has reduced its carbon footprint by upgrading their hot water system to solar. The project has also installed a rainwater tank which harvests water to irrigate the preschool’s lawns and gardens. The preschool’s energy use has been slashed by 21 per cent, and is saving an estimated 25 megawatt hours of electricity and 26 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years. The rainwater system is saving an estimated 1 million litres of water in the first 10 years.

The Macquarie Preschools Co-operative has upgraded amenities fixtures and installed rainwater tanks, insulation, skylights and a solar hot water system which has reduced water and energy use at Blackalls Park Preschool. The project has been part of an educational program for children to increase their awareness of water and energy sustainability. The project is saving an estimated 1.2 million litres of water, 20 megawatt hours of electricity and 21 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Carey Bay Preschool Energy Project

Macquarie Preschools Co-operative Ltd will fully insulate their Carey Bay Preschool ceiling to reduce heating and cooling needs and improve comfort levels for their children, families and staff. The project will save the centre 11 megawatt hours of electricity and 12 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Lyall Peacock Field Energy and Water Saving Project

The Macquarie Scorpions Rugby League Football Club has installed energy efficient lighting at Peacock Field, Toronto to save an estimated 88 megawatt hours of electricity and 93 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years and cut power use by 25 per cent. The Club has also installed a 50,050 litre tank to supply rainwater to irrigate the oval, saving an estimated 4.1 million litres of water in the first 10 years.

Malua Bay Bowling & Recreation Club Ltd

The Malua Bay Bowling & Recreation Club has undertaken a facility-wide lighting upgrade and installed two new energy efficient hot water systems with heat pump units. The Club is located south of Batemans Bay and provides Malua Bay with its sole central meeting place and social and sporting facilities. The project is reducing power costs by saving 381 megawatt hours of electricity and 404 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Mangrove Mountain and Districts Community Group Inc.
Climate Control Mangrove Mountain Hall

Mangrove Mountain Districts Community Hall has installed an insulating roof blanket and an industrial vent on their hall roof as part of an energy saving project. The hall is used regularly by members of the community for meetings, events and markets. The project ensures a better controlled climate, allowing the hall to be cooler in summer and warmer in winter while reducing the annual power use by 41 per cent.

Manildra Bowling Club Ltd
Water Saving Scheme
Funding: $40,000
Region: Central West

Manildra Bowling Club has installed two rainwater tanks and a solar hot water system to cut its water and energy use. The tanks have been connected to the facility’s roof catchment area to be used for watering the bowling greens, helping to cut the Club’s water use by 5 million litres in the first 10 years. The Club has also installed a solar hot water system and is saving an estimated 106 megawatt hours of electricity and 113 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Manly Golf Club Energy Efficiency Program

The Manly Golf Club provides sport and social programs and facilities to around 1,400 members. The Club will upgrade to energy efficient lights which is estimated to save 250 megawatt hours of energy and 265 tonnes greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Small Boat, Big Sea Water and Energy Savings Project

Manly Ministry Centre in Fairlight is a multi-function community centre which provides facilities to more than 400 people a week. The Centre is undertaking a water and energy upgrade to save water, power and greenhouse gas emissions. The Centre is installing a 400 litre rainwater tank, a gas boosted solar hot water system, synthetic turf, energy efficient lighting and water efficient toilets and taps. The project is estimated to save 1 million litres of water, 21 megawatts of electricity and 22 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Facilities Upgrade Reducing Enviromental Footprint Stage 2

Marks Point Bowling Club provides services for around 1,000 people each week. The Club will increase the capacity of existing water tanks to capture surface and sub-surface run off from the bolwing greens. The harvested water will then be used for ground watering and to wash down equipment. This project is expected to save 9.2 million litres of water in the first 10 years. The Club will also replace their inefficient electric hot water sytem with a solar hot water system. This upgrade is estimated to save 30 megawatt hours of electricity and 32 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Maroubra Neighbourhood Children’s Centre will install ceiling insulation and convert an old electric hot water system to a 5-star gas system to save on energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint by 11 megawatt hours of electricity and 12 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

The Marsfield Community Church provide a range of services to more than 200 people every week in the local area. The Church will install a rainwater tank to supply rainwater for toilet flushing and an energy efficient fridge. The project is estimated to save 700,000 litres of water, 2 megawatt hours of electricity and 2 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Mathoura Preschool is located south of Deniliquin near the Murray River and operates out of the local community hall. The Preschool has undertaken a facility-wide upgrade to reduce their power and water use. They have installed a new rainwater tank connected to the toilets for flushing, a new solar hot water system to replace an old electric system and passive design elements, including window tinting and skylights to reduce the amount of energy used for lighting and to cool the hall in summer.  This project is saving an estimated 1.3 million litres of water, 22 megawatt hours of electricity and 24 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Medowie Community Preschool Upgrade

Medowie Community Preschool in Port Stephens have replaced their old toilets with dual flush systems and installed a new solar hot water system. The community based Pre-school has been operating for 25 years and provides services for 70 families. The environmentally friendly devices will help the Preschool slash water use by 85 per cent and is saving an estimated 510,000 litres of water, 10 megawatt hours of electricity and 10 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

The Mercy Community Services provide aged and disability services for over 150 people each week. Mercy Community Services will undertake a water saving project by replacing inefficient single flush toilets with dual flush toilet suites. They will also install rainwater tanks to harvest rainwater from their roof to use in the new toilets and washing machines. The project is estimated to save 2.5 million litres of water in the first 10 years.

Merimbula Imlay Bowling Club Ltd
Green Light Project

The Merimbula Imlay Bowling Club has reduced its power consumption by retrofitting the facility with low-wattage lighting and movement and daylight sensors. The sporting, leisure and entertainment facility now benefits from reduced lighting bills saving an estimated 435 megawatt hours of electricity and 461 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

The Merimbula RSL Club has installed energy efficient lighting and advanced sensors to reduce power use. This project is saving an estimated 394 megawatt hours of electricity and 418 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Metro Screen Ltd
Television Studio Lighting Upgrade

Region: Greater Metropolitan Sydney

Metro Screen has upgraded the existing halogen lighting at the television production and training centre to energy efficient fluorescent lighting. The TV Studio is saving an estimated 275 megawatt hours of electricity and 292 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years. Metro Screen is a not-for-profit screen resource and training organisation servicing more than 5,000 people from a wide range of community and cultural groups within NSW.

Middle Harbour 16ft Skiff Sailing Club

The Middle Harbour 16ft Skiff Sailing Club is installing an efficient indirect evaporative cooling system, rather than a conventional cooling system. This is expected to save 400 megawatt hours of electricity and 424 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Sustainable Mikayla - a Greener Future for our Children

Mikayla Children's Centre at Katoomba has installed two rainwater tanks to harvest water for toilet flushing in the children's bathroom. Toilets have been upgraded to dual flush and sensor taps installed. The Centre is saving an estimated 2.6 million litres of water in the first 10 years.

Miranda Kindergarten in the Sutherland Shire has installed a solar hot water system, water-efficient taps and toilets and upgraded lighting. The project also involved educating families about simple ways they can make their homes and workplaces become more water and energy efficient. The efficiency upgrade will reduce the Kindergarten’s power use by 21 per cent and is saving an estimated 65 megawatt hours of electricity, 69 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and 1.5 million litres of water in the first 10 years.

Triple Care Farm Ceiling Insulation Program

Mission Australia has insulated three buildings to improve their heating and cooling efficiency. This is providing a better living and working environment for residents, staff, volunteers and community members that hire the property. The project is reducing power use significantly and is saving an estimated 70 megawatt hours of electricity and 107 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Mittagong Preschool Kindergarten's Water & Energy Efficiency Project

Mittagong Preschool Kindergarten has undertaken a lighting upgrade, installed low flow tap restrictors and a rainwater tank to harvest water for the new dual flush toilets and irrigate the garden. Together, they are saving an estimated 3.6 million litres of water, 53 megawatt hours of electricity and 56 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

The Mollymook Beach Bowling and Recreation Club has installed rainwater tanks to harvest water for irrigation and flush toilets. The project has replaced the electric hot water system with a solar alternative. On average 20,000 people use the Club each year and the project is saving an estimated 11 million litres of water, 35 megawatt hours of electricity and 37 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Moorebank Sports Club has replaced all existing inefficient lighting with new compact fluorescent lighting. This project is helping the Club save 524 megawatt hours of electricity and 555 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Moruya Bowling and Recreation Club has undertaken a lighting upgrade and installed highly energy efficient LED lights to reduce the club’s environmental footprint. The Club has also replaced two electric hot water units with solar systems. The Club provides a community facility for more than 80,000 members, guests and visitors every year. This project is saving an estimated 257 megawatt hours of electricity and 272 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

The Moruya Golf Club has undertaken a comprehensive lighting and insulation upgrade to its club house and facilities to reduce power consumption. Insulation has been installed to provide cheaper and more efficient heating and cooling while the addition of new louvre windows has increased natural air flow in meeting rooms. The project is saving an estimated 43 megawatt hours of electricity and 46 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Possum’s Patch Children’s Hub Energy Saving Education Project

Region: Greater Metropolitan Sydney

Possum’s Patch Children’s Hub will undertake an energy efficiency upgrade to cut water and power use. The project involves installing new sensor taps, a 22,500 litre water tank to connect to three new water efficient junior toilets, and a 13,500 litre water tank to connect to the washing machine. Ceilings and windows will be insulated and an airlock will stop heated air escaping the building. The project will reduce power use and is saving an estimated 2.7 million litres of water in the first 10 years.

The Murwillumbah Services Club has installed dual flush toilets, tap water restrictors and a rainwater tank which now provides water for toilet flushing and the washing machine. Power saving initiatives include the replacement of the fluorescent tubes with energy efficient LED and motion sensor lighting in the areas that are less frequently used. The project is saving an estimated 9.5 million litres of water, 116 megawatt hours of electricity and 123 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

The Murwillumbah Showground Trust provides facilities for over 100 people each week and holds regular events at the showground. The Trust has installed energy efficient lighting and appliances which are saving an estimated 181 megawatt hours of electricity and 192 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Muswellbrook Preschool Kindergarten has installed energy efficient lighting and a solar hot water system. Children and their families are also learning how simple it is to adopt power and water efficiency measures in their own homes. The preschool will cut power use by 27 per cent and is saving an estimated 60 megawatt hours of electricity and 64 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Nambucca Heads Local Aboriginal Land Council have upgraded ‘The Mish Shed’, the Aboriginal Reserve to save water and power as well as enable the Mish Shed to serve as a comfortable place to hold meetings, activities and for a community garden. By installing a rainwater tank for toilet flushing, new water efficient amenities, a new solar hot water system and insulation, the project is saving an estimated 720,000 litres of water, 3 megawatt hours of electricity and 3 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years. The Nambucca Heads Local Aboriginal Land Council is committed to providing a community and activity centre for the youth living both on the Aboriginal Reserve (the Mish) and in town.

Nambucca Heads SLSC Energy Efficiency Project

Nambucca Heads Surf Life Saving Club will undertake an energy upgrade to save power and greenhouse gas emissions. The project involves installing natural and power efficient lighting, solar hot water for the changing rooms and insulation to reduce the requirements for artificial cooling. The facility is used seven days a week by local groups, visitors and tourists. This project will cut power use by 91 per cent, saving 117 megawatt hours of electricity and 124 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

The Nambucca Preschool Play Centre has installed a new solar hot water system and skylights, and connect a rainwater tank to the toilets. The project also involves installing roof insulation and energy efficient lighting, helping to save more than 1.6 million litres of water, 60 megawatt hours of electricity and 64 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Narooma Golf Club is committed to reducing its energy and water use to save money and improve environmental performance. This project included a number of passive design installations and a lighting upgrade to make the clubhouse more efficient and comfortable for its members and visitors. The project is saving an estimated 1,400 megawatt hours of electricity and 1,484 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Narooma Preschool Kindergarten Association
Inspiring Our Children to Make Sustainable Choices

Narooma Preschool has installed solar hot water, skylights, solar powered natural ventilation and will upgrade old lighting fixtures with energy efficient alternatives to reduce annual energy use by more than 40 per cent. The project has decreased the need for lighting, allowed curtains to remain closed during winter to effectively reduce heating costs and negate the need for fans for cooling in summer. The project is educating the preschool’s 80 children about power efficiency while saving 39 megawatt hours of electricity and 41 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Narooma Sporting and Services Club has installed two 22,500 litre rainwater tanks to capture water from the Clubhouse roof for reuse in amenities and for watering the bowling greens. The project has also replaced inefficient single flush toilets with dual flush toilets and installed water efficient bathroom and kitchen taps. The Club is saving an estimated 10.1 million litres of water in the first 10 years and cutting power consumption by nearly 38 per cent.

The Narromine Preschool Kindergarten has replaced three existing taps in the children's bathrooms with push button taps featuring automatic shut-off. Children are prone to forgetting to turn taps off or not turning them off completely. The upgrades are saving an estimated 1 million litres of water in the first 10 years.

Newcastle Family Support Services has improved energy efficiency at the Joy Cummings Centre by installing ceiling insulation and protective window tinting to save power and improve the comfort of areas that do not currently have air conditioning. This project is saving an estimated 46 megawatt hours of electricity and 49 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Wanderers Oval Water Collection and Irrigation System

The Newcastle Macedonia Sports Club has installed 60,000 litres worth of rainwater tanks to collect water from the main and secondary grandstands to use in an automatic timed popup sprinkler system for watering Wanderers Oval, a premier football facility. The Club is cutting its water use by 33 per cent and saving an estimated 13.3 million litres of water in the first 10 years.

Nigyanni Indigenous Corporation
Improved Water and Energy Efficiency at the Gwabegar Lifeline Shop

Region: Northern

Nigyanni Indigenous Corporation has implemented a range of water saving measures to reduce annual water and power consumption. The central community organisation in the small town of Gwabegar, south west of Narrabri, has also installed three new rainwater tanks at Gwabegar Lifeline Shop and replaced guttering and downpipes to harvest rainwater to improve water efficiency. The project also involved upgrades to dual flush toilets, fixing leaks and upgrading to a more energy efficient hot water system. The new initiatives are saving an estimated 2 million litres of water, 10 megawatt hours of electricity and 11 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

North Coast Sikh Association Inc.
Upgrading to a Solar Hot Water System from an old Electric System

The North Coast Sikh Association in Bangalow has installed a new solar hot water system in their Byron Bay hall to cut power use by 26 per cent and help the organisation continue to provide low cost meals to the community. The project is saving an estimated 19 megawatt hours of electricity and 20 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

North Shore Temple Emanuel in Chatswood has upgraded the sanctuary, entrance and entry foyer, function hall and education centre with energy efficient lighting and solar hot water heating. The Jewish Temple is cutting power use by nearly 20 per cent and saving an estimated 222 megawatt hours of electricity and 235 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

North St. Marys Community Preschool

North St Marys Community Preschool has upgraded the children’s bathroom with dual flush toilets and sensor taps to save water. These measures are reducing the school’s water use by an estimated 2.1 million litres of water in the first 10 years.

Region: Greater Metropolitan Sydney

The Crows Nest Centre is a not-for-profit organisation that offers meals on wheels, seniors’ computer clubs, respite day care, transport and function venue hire. The Centre has around 200 visitors each week. The Crows Nest site will be upgraded by refitting lights and installing an energy saving module on the current air conditioning system. The project is estimated to save 470 megawatt hours of electricity and 498 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Nowra Bowling and Recreation Club Ltd
Energy and Water Savings for a Sustainable Future

Region: Illawarra

By upgrading to waterless woks and using more energy efficient light globes, Nowra Bowling and Recreation Club is saving water, power and greenhouse gas emissions. The waterless wok has been modelled on the success of the Ethnic Communities Council project and is helping save the club an estimated 12.8 million litres of water in the first 10 years. The lighting upgrade is saving an estimated 98 megawatt hours of electricity and 104 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Oak Flats Bowling & Recreation Club Ltd
Water Efficiency Project

Oak Flats Bowling & Recreation Club has installed new water storage tanks to collect rainwater to flush new four star water efficient toilets and for use in washing machines throughout the Club. The harvested water is also being used to irrigate bowling greens. With approximately 750 people visiting the Club daily, the project is saving an estimated 25.7 million litres of water in the first 10 years.

Oatley RSL provide social and recreational facilities to the local community. The RSL will install energy efficient lights and replace inefficient electric hot water storage systems with heat pump systems. The project is estimated to save 170 megawatt hours of electricity and 180 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Ocean Shores Sustainable Education Project

Ocean Shores Preschool has undertaken an efficiency upgrade to save water, power and greenhouse gas emissions. The project also introduces basic environmental and sustainability concepts to three to five year olds. The Pre-school has installed a rainwater tank, new dual flush toilets, low water flow taps, a screen door, energy efficient lighting, a solar hot water system, and ceiling insulation. These simple initiatives are saving an estimated 900,000 litres of water, 31 megawatt hours of electricity and 33 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.

Odyssey House McGrath Foundation

Odyssey House provides residential and non-residential rehabilitation programs to men and women who require support resulting from drug, alcohol or gambling addictions. Odyssey House has upgraded their air conditioning and installed flow control valves and a water efficient toilet suite. New energy efficient lighting has also been installed throughout the facility. The project is saving an estimated 479 megawatt hours of electricity, 508 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and 1.5 million litres of water in the first 10 years.

Orange City Bowling Club Ltd

The Orange City Bowling Club has installed a solar hot water system to supply their kitchens, public bars and facilities. The project will reduce the bowling club’s total energy use by more than 13 per cent and is saving an estimated 550 megawatt hours of electricity and 635 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the first 10 years.
