Public Sector Award Energy
- Sydney Water - Energy Management and Renewable Energy Generation

Sydney Water is Australia's largest water utility supplying drinking water, recycled water, wastewater services and some stormwater services to more than four million people in NSW.

Their Management Unit has made significant achievements through the development and operation of eleven renewable energy projects that will generate one fifth of its energy needs and reduce carbon emissions by almost 80,000 tonnes a year.

Sydney Water has developed initiatives like the Cost of Carbon Abatement Tool and has been actively involved in demand management projects.


Highly Commended awarded to Housing NSW - Department of Human Services.

Public Sector Award Sustainability
- Macquarie University - People, Planet and Participation

Macquarie University equips students with the ability to deal with the challenges of the 21st century and conducts research to improve society and the environment.

Their holistic sustainability strategy includes procurement, resource efficiency and transportation as well as learning and teaching, engagement, fair trade, and governance.

Their resource focus has led to substantial savings in energy, water and waste, including a 70% diversion of waste from landfill.

Local Government Sustainability
- Our River - Cooks River Sustainability Initiative (Joint Winner)

The Cooks River Sustainability Initiative is a voluntary association of 8 local councils including Ashfield, Bankstown, Canterbury, City of Sydney, Hurstville, Marrickville, Rockdale, and Strathfield councils, the Cooks River Foreshores Working Group and Monash University.

The two million dollar initiative began in 2007 and will run until 2011. The project strives to improve river health and enhance council and community capacity for Sustainable Urban Water Management. The project involves the construction of eleven water sensitive urban design elements including rain-gardens, swales and stormwater harvesting.

Local Government Sustainability
- Surry Hills Library and Community Centre (Joint Winner)

The Surry Hills Library and Community Centre is a benchmark building designed and built with recycled construction materials.

A combination of innovative design and technologies were used to provide a direct benefit to 21,000 residents by cutting greenhouse emissions by 11 tonnes each year, storing and reusing rainwater, saving 680,000 litres of mains water each year and reducing water consumption by 65 per cent.
