2011 Energy, Water and Waste Winners
2011 Energy Award Winner
enLighten Australia
“Winning a Green Globe Award is a landmark for our young and emerging company. It enhances enLighten’s credentials as a leader in energy-efficient lighting whose Smart Lighting patents are leading the world, not just Australia. More importantly, to win will help focus wider community attention on the potential for energy saving in lighting, particularly the benefits of Smart Lighting.”
David Whitfield CEO enlighten Australia
enlighten Australia are challenging traditional approaches to lighting by creating a new suite of innovative products that:
reduce energy use by more than 65 per cent
consider the ‘whole of life’ functionality of the product including maintenance and
provide a return on investment in less than 3 years.
It is estimated that lighting currently accounts for more than 20 per cent of costs in commercial and retail markets. Enlighten’s products have the ability to reduce this consumption by over two thirds, saving money on bills and reducing the impact on the environment.
enLighten have patented four new innovative products for the market:
Grid Ceiling System – first patent technology evaluating the distribution of building services in commercial offices to provide energy savings
safe design of LED tubes – by identifying a significant electrical safety design fault in fluorescent tubes, enLighten have re-designed the LED tube and is currently the only product to meet the requirements for IPART for Energy Saving Certificates
ERaMs – enLighten has created a methodology for providing lighting upgrades without the need for capital expenditure by providing monthly maintenance service fee to include supply, installation, preventative and rectification maintenance
Chameleon Multi Function Light – this light can manage two lighting levels in one fixture allowing the same area to be fully-lit when occupied and switches to low-level lighting to meet safety requirements.
enLighten completed their first commercial installation last year which resulted in a 68 per cent reduction in lighting energy use.
2011 Water Award Winner
Cameron’s Nursery
“Cameron’s Nursery is very excited and proud to be awarded a Green Globe Award. Pioneering this project, where our ideas were not common-place in the industry, had its risks but the results have been worthwhile. We hope to share our success with the industry and help to educate others while we continue to help the environment.”
Sonja Cameron – Director
Cameron’s Nursery, located in Sydney’s Hills District, have designed their own capillary watering system after discovering that commercially available systems were unsuitable for their site.
After a decade of learning, extensive testing and collaborating with government and industry the nursery is recycling 30 per cent of the water applied to plants and saving 3.5 million litres of drinking water each year.
The Nursery has also increased their ability to capture and store water by 240 per cent and is actively participating in sharing this knowledge with industry, government and the community.
2011 Waste and Recycling Award Winner
Dunlop Flooring – Recycle by Dunlop
Dunlop flooring is proud to win a Green Globe Award. Through our design, manufacturing and distribution we work towards effectiveness in water, energy and waste savings. We promote sustainability through our National Recycling Program in partnership with over 500 companies around Australia. Dunlop Flooring appreciates and values the partnership with the [Office of Environment and Heritage’s] Sustainability Advantage program.
Mr Joe Fernandes - National Operations Manager
Dunlop flooring has developed an innovative solution in diverting carpet waste from landfill with their Recycle by Dunlop program.
In 2009/10, Dunlop diverted more than 6,500 tonnes of used carpet underlay from landfill by collecting scrap materials when delivering finished goods. This closed-loop manufacturing has nearly halved the organisation’s transport costs.
Over 98 per cent of the collected waste is treated and recycled into new products. This also saves the company on a trip and they have nearly halved their transport costs.
Dunlop recently became the first underlay manufacturer in Australia and New Zealand to achieve a GOLD PLUS ‘Green Tag’ industry certification which rates Dunlop’s products in the top 15 per cent of eco-friendly products available under the Green Building Council of Australia Green Star Rating Tools.
Dunlop is continuing to invest in new innovative ways to recycle products. They are currently collaborating with government and investing in machinery to conduct trials to recycle post consumer carpet tile fibres into carpet cushions.
2011 Waste and Recycling Award - Highly Commended
OzHarvest
"OzHarvest is honoured to participate in the Green Globe Awards. To have our environmental impact in NSW recognised and validated is truly rewarding. We proudly display our 2011 award for all to see!"
Ronni Kahn, OzHarvest founder and CEO
OzHarvest is a charitable organisation that rescues food from restaurants, food outlets and corporate kitchens that would otherwise be thrown away and delivers it free, on the same day, to charities that feed the disadvantaged and homeless.
The economic, social and environmental consequences of saving excess food going to landfill are significant. OzHarvest endeavour to evenly distribute food to 245 charities in Sydney and a further 35 in Newcastle, rescuing approximately 20 tonnes of food from landfill each week.
The organisation estimates it has saved 4,000 metric tons of carbon pollution – the equivalent to taking around 1,000 cars of the road, by saving food from landfill.
The food donations are not only nutritious but it also allows charities to re-direct funds into other essential services.
