Making a Place for Herself: women's experiences of landscapes and national parks is a highly engaging and informative DECC travelling exhibition that was officially opened by the Director General, Lisa Corbyn, at the Palm House at the Royal Botanic Gardens in November 2005.

The exhibition examines how women have made places for themselves and their families in NSW landscapes, enduring hardships, loneliness, isolation, but also experiencing the freedom, joy, pleasure and exhilaration of being in particular landscapes and places.
Women's roles in shaping the reserve system, in stewardship and conservation of the natural and cultural environment, in environmental recreation such as bushwalking and skiing, as well as their roles in pastoralism, mining and other significant past land uses are typically not well known or interpreted. Making a Place for Herself redresses this by exploring a range of historical and contemporary experiences that women have had in national park landscapes across NSW. Through captivating photographs and a selection of distinctive personal stories and experiences the landscapes of NSW are brought vividly to life in ways which both inspire and inform visitors.
The exhibition has been awarded in the annual National Heritage Trust Heritage Awards, recognising excellence in heritage conservation projects in NSW.
The Jury commented that the exhibition 'presented women's experiences in conserving, forming, working in and living in National Parks heritage landscapes in New South Wales. Beautifully put together, and with evocative graphics, the exhibition enables viewers to connect with individual women over history and learn about their stories.'
The exhibition is travelling through national park visitor centres including many of the places featured in the exhibition.
