An early dairy of the Camden Vale Milk Co Ltd (later changed to Dairy Farmers).

Description

Physical description: Two storey rendered brick building which has a T-shaped plan and many vents in its iron roof. Modern additions such as the carburettor shop and inappropriate paving have altered its appearance. It has a verandah with a flat metal roof and metal posts that is enclosed with wire mesh gates facing Argyle Street. The windows of the building are fixed with metal frames. There is a concrete ramp leading up to the first floor from the Edward Street entrance.

Modifications and dates: Concrete ramp to first floor, concrete to building, metal framed windows probably replaced timber framed windows.

History

Historical notes: The foundation stone was laid in 1926 by Mrs F.A. Macarthur-Onslow, Mayoress of Camden and wife of Camden Vale Milk Co Ltd. The name was later changed to Dairy Farmers Co-operative Milk Co in 1928. They operated the factory until the 1970s.

Integrity/Intactness: The Old Dairy Farmer's Co-op Depot has poor to fair integrity and intactness.

Recommended management:

Conserve and maintain significant fabric. Future renovations could involve possible reversal of unsympathetic alterations (ie concrete ramp).
