Important landmark building in the Bondi Beach townscape. Built in the early years of Bondi's popularity. Retains architectural interest for its individual design and unusual styling, despite some loss of integrity. Regional significance.

Description

Construction years: 1915-1945
Physical description: 1920's hotel. Four storeys with square tower above, on corner. Good frontages to both streets. Face brick, now painted, with render used for decoration. Recessed balconies on Curlewis Street façade, one now enclosed. Four storey verandah to Campbell Parade returning to south elevation. Rusticated columns. Individually styled balustrading, and parapet. Mouldings on lower arches and high cornices. Elliptical arches to top verandah level with keystones. A mixture of Federation, Italianate and Free Classical influences. Some major additions to the side and rear, poorly designed but not seriously detracting.

History

Historical notes: Architect was E Lindsay Thompson. Built by Howie, Moffat & Co. for Reschs. Struggled early due to its relative isolation but has continued as a popular resort hotel ever since.
