Notable twentieth century public school building, essentially intact. Good local example of an Inter-War Stripped Classical style. Social and historical interest and part of the Bondi Beach townscape. Local significance.

Description

Construction years: 1915-1945
Physical description: Good, 1920's school building. Set well back from Campbell Parade. Long faade, with additional long wing facing Warners Avenue. Simply styled and proportioned. Classical influence most evident in central portico. A stone feature, with Tuscan columns and entablature. Restrained, decorative brickwork to remainder of building. Gable above portico breaks up long pitched roof. Timber framed windows, double hung with 12 panes each.

History

Historical notes: Site acquired in 1916 but Government baulked at the costs of filling. Other sites were investigated but eventually the school buildings were erected here. Main building opened in 1923. Originally had roof of asbestos shingles. New wing added 1932. Enrolments peaked in 1937. Originally named North Bondi Public School. (Dowd p. 201).
