Statement of significance:

Good example of an Inter-War, Art Deco style hotel. Unaltered except for rendering. Property also has historic interest as the site of the area's first hotel. In continuous use as a hotel since 1857. Local significance.

Description

Construction years: 1915-1945
Physical description: Good Art Deco style hotel on key corner site. Elaborate render decoration above awning. Characteristic vertical fins, with horizontal bands. Original tiles below suspended steel awning. Hipped, tiled roof broken by parapets. Symmetrical design. Large corner splay effectively creates three facades. Features recessed balconies on each of these.

History

Historical notes: The first hotel built on this site by William Newland in 1857. Took the name Charing Cross when the locality was renamed in 1859. Two storey stone building, used by the former municipal council for some of its early meetings. Rebuilt c. 1935, removing all traces of the original building. Originally face brick, only recently rendered (see photo in Dowd, at p. 279).
