Statement of significance:

One of the best local examples of a Federation semi-detached. Intact and displaying some outstanding craftsmanship. Local significance.

Description

Construction years: 1890-1915
Physical description: Symmetrical style Federation semi. Original tuckpointed light brick, with darker brick used for decoration. High slate roof with gambrel at apex. Also features terra cotta ridge capping. Canted bays on end projections with outstanding, flying gables above. Small entry porches between projections. Elaborate timberwork to valances and barge boards is exceptional. Gables and excellent chimneys are roughcast. Good windows with extensive use of small coloured panes, skylights included. Original doors with glazed panels. Sympathetic picket fencing (unpainted).

History

Historical notes: First appears in Sands Directory around 1914, when No. 18 was known as "Devonia" and occupied by David Eisenberg. No. 20 was known as "Raema" and occupied by Laurence Coutts.
