Statement of significance:

There are a number of stone houses in Isabella Street, Blenheim and Birrell Streets. Dowd considers that they may date back to the 1850's as he is taking much of his information (without acknowledgement) from the 1924 articles by Major Johnston, who had access to older informants, this date is probably substantially correct. All of these houses have archaeological potential, particularly in areas of backyards, wells and privies in which household refuse was discarded. In this group, 85-87 Birrell Street is a pair of very plain houses with facades flush to the street; each has a central door flanked by tall windows. No. 89 Birrell Street (cnr. Isabella Street) is a two storey house with top storey verandah and a symmetrical façade with tall windows on each floor, the upper ones being French windows. Dowd illustrates this group in a 1958 photo, prior to restoration; the chimney pots are the same, but the upper verandah of No. 89 is enclosed.
