Statement of significance:

The Francis Street substation is an attractive and intact Interwar building that features a Mediterranean styled multicoloured ceramic tiled parapet. It was built by the Municipal Council of Sydney during the period of rapid expansion of the electricity network to the suburbs.

Physical description: The Francis Street substation is a double height building with a symmetrical fa├žade in a mixture of the Interwar Georgian Revival and Mediterranean styles. Two large arched plant access doorways are located either side of a personnel entrance. Stylistic elements include a multi coloured ceramic tiled parapet with a corbelled brick cornice, and tuck pointed brickwork.

The Francis Street substation is constructed in a dark face brick. Elongated bull nosed bricks form the two arched entrances and the parapet is capped with ceramic tiles.

Minor grafitti.

Modifications and dates: Roof tiles appear to have been repalced. Gutters and downpipes replaced. Doors repalced. Front brick fence rebuilt and overpainted.

Historical notes: The Francis Street substation is a purpose designed and built structure dating from 1928. A metal name plaque reads, "M. C. of S. ELECTRICITY DEPT. SUBSTATION No. 346". It was built by the Municipal Council of Sydney during the period of rapid expansion of the electricity network to the suburbs.

This item contributes to local character and should be conserved. Original details should be maintained including doors, windows and original signage. New materials should be sympathetic to the nature and character of the original building. In the event of major proposed changes, prepare a Conservation Management Strategy and undertake an archival recording. Wherever possible, changes should be restricted to the interior of the building. Routine maintenance of existing fabric is essential.
