Appliance replacement offer - frequently asked questions

Answers to frequently asked questions about the appliance replacement offer.

If I take up the offer, how much money can I expect to save on my energy bills?

Replacing a fridge that is six years or older can save your household up to $200 a year on your energy bill. This is based on replacement of a large 6–15 year old fridge with a new 400L, 3.5 star fridge.

Replacing a plasma or cathode ray tube (CRT) TV with an LCD/LED TV can save your household up to $125 a year on your energy bill. This is based on replacement of a 40 inch plasma or CRT TV with a new 40 inch, 6 star LCD/LED with 5.2 hours use per day.

Why are only fridges and TVs available?

Fridges and TVs are two of the most commonly used household energy consuming appliances. Cost benefit analysis shows that replacement of fridges and TVs can offer the greatest potential for energy savings.

Washing machines were considered, but cost benefit analysis shows they do not provide as much in energy savings. You can still save energy though by washing in cold water and save your household around $50 a year.

See energy saving tips.

Why is there only a selected range of TVs and fridges available?

The models available under this offer have been chosen based on their energy star rating, affordability, and product quality. TVs must have an energy rating greater than 5 stars, and fridges must have an energy rating greater than 3 stars.

Can I buy a TV that is larger than 42 inches?

No. We want to ensure the TVs selected for the offer use as little energy as possible. Larger TVs generally consume more energy than smaller models, so we have limited the TV size to 42 inches.
