Gas hot water systems

A mains natural gas supply is not available in every area of New South Wales, but where it is both storage and continuous flow systems can be installed, with a choice of internal and external models.

When choosing a system, look for one with a five or six star energy rating - the more stars, the more energy efficient the water heater and the lower its greenhouse gas emissions. Plus, every extra star means you won’t be wasting money. 

Hot water circulators

Continuous flow (also known as instantaneous) gas hot water systems usually only start to heat water once you turn on the tap, which is why it runs cold before becoming hot.

Installing a hot water circulator on the system not only cuts your bills and consumption, it provides instant hot water to your shower, sink, bathtub and washing appliances.

It works by recovering unused heated water from the pipes and sending it back into the system to be reheated or used later. A hot water circulator can save an average household 17,000 litres - around 2000 buckets - of wasted water each year.

There are various types of hot water circulators (PDF 1.5MB) - some of which are only compatible with certain continuous gas hot water systems. Before installing your hot water circulator, you will need to check that it meets the requirements of your local council, which may need to make an inspection.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)

Though both are hydrocarbons, LPG is a different chemical compound to natural gas, as it consists of propane and/or butane. Although gaseous under normal atmospheric conditions, LPG is stored under modest pressures in concentrated, liquid form. It costs on average around one-and-a-half to three times the price of natural gas or off-peak electricity.
