Government assistance

Government support has played an important role in helping solar become affordable. It has helped thousands of NSW households install solar systems.

What support is there?

The Australian Government’s Renewable Energy Target (RET) requires energy retailers to source a portion of their energy from renewable sources like solar, wind and hydroelectric power.

Solar systems up to 100kW are supported by the Renewable Energy Target through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.

The scheme generates certificates which are traded to create subsidies for renewable energy projects.

Households investing in a solar system assign their certificates to the solar retailer. Your retailer will then discount the cost of the solar system in exchange. The discount will be around 30 to 40 per cent.
