Land Alive - Aboriginal land management for biodiversity
Land Alive gives Aboriginal landowners a chance to create jobs and business opportunities, managing land for conservation through the BioBanking Scheme.
Land Alive is all about building the skills and capacity of Aboriginal landowners so they can be among the early leaders in the BioBanking market.
Land Alive provides Aboriginal people with the acquisition of real skills, creating opportunities for long-term jobs. Participants will gain practical experience, learning about the BioBanking Scheme and its benefits.
Land Alive is also an opportunity for Aboriginal ecological knowledge to be recognised alongside scientific approaches to land management. Aboriginal landowners can generate an income from land management while enhancing their role as land stewards with unique Aboriginal cultural knowledge.
Through its Environmental Trust, the NSW Government has put forward $5 million in funding for Land Alive to June 2011.
Land Alive offers:
- Assistance to map and assess the biodiversity of Aboriginal-owned land
- Training in land management and employment services
- Advice on participating in the BioBanking Scheme
- Support for starting a small business focusing on land management
- Assistance in developing land management plans
The Land Alive project will produce:
- A training model to assist Aboriginal land managers to engage in BioBanking at various levels, from trainees to trainers.
- A compendium of Aboriginal cultural land management practices for presentation to mainstream land management organisations.
- Land Alive case studies, presenting practical examples of the project, showcasing successes and highlighting challenges.
