Sensational wildflower season in Kosciuszko
Media release - Thursday, 10 January 2008
Now is the time to view the carpet of wildflowers across the top of Australia.
The Manager of Business and Tourism in the Snowy Mountains for the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Steve Redden said good rain and warm conditions had combined to produce one of the best wildflower seasons in Kosciuszko National Park in recent years.
He said the wildflowers can be seen not only along walking tracks, but also on the side of the roads. There are so many silver snow daisies in flower that on some hillsides you would think you were looking at a light dusting of snow in the distance.
"Now is the best time to come and view the wildflowers. There are a wide range of wildflowers including some endangered alpine flora. You are likely to see billy-buttons, trigger plant, bluebells and gentians.
"Also flowering are the beautiful snow gums, they are currently displaying sweet scented white flowers. They don't flower every year – and this is the first time in a number of years that we've seen their lovely display."
