Feral deer numbers growing in Snowy Mountains
Media release - Monday, March 10 2008
The increasing problem of wild deer in the Snowy Mountains has been highlighted by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife's Snowy Mountains Regional Advisory Committee.
Committee chairman John Hood said one of the issues discussed during the committee's recent two day meeting was the growing problem of wild deer.
He said deer numbers seemed to be increasing and that the animals were being seen in areas where they had previously not been noticed.
"The committee members agreed that the management of wild deer was a potential problem for the park and would present a challenge for the NPWS in the future," said Mr Hood.
Other management issues discussed at the meeting included future management programs for the Merriangaah Nature Reserve near Bombala.
Mr Hood said the advisory committee were able to visit the area and meet with members of the community to jointly discuss current and future management programs for the nature reserve.
"Merriangaah Nature Reserve has been in existence since 2001 and the NPWS recently exhibited a draft management plan for this reserve and two adjacent reserves."
"I encourage anyone with an interest in the future of the reserves to have a look at the draft management plan and make a written submission."
Copies of the draft plan are available from the NPWS office in Jindabyne on 6450 5555 or Bombala on 6458 4080
The closing date for submissions is 28 April 2008.
