Apparent bird poisonings spark warning

Media release: 21 July 2008

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is concerned about reports of apparently poisoned birds in the Forbes and Tullamore areas.

NPWS Lachlan Area Ranger Mathew Makeham said members of the public have been reporting mixed bird species deaths.

"About 25 magpies were reported as poisoned in Forbes about six weeks ago and we have had reports from the Tullamore area of crested pigeons, magpies, cockatoos and corellas all dead."

"Unfortunately we've been unable to test the birds for cause of death as we need a really fresh sample to do this."

"We'd like to remind everyone that poisoning native birds is illegal - this includes crested pigeons."

"Poisoning can also have a devastating effect on other species such as family pets which could eat the dead birds."

"I would urge anyone who is having issues with birds to contact NPWS to discuss options and obtain a licence before taking any action to harm the birds."

"If members of the public see something suspicious or if you do notice birds dying in numbers, please contact NPWS as soon as possible to enable fresh samples to be sent to the laboratory for testing."

"You can contact the Forbes NPWS office on 6851 4429," Mr Makeham said.
