Wetland art on exhibition at Hunter Wetlands Centre
Media release: 21 July 2008
The moods and essence of Australian wetlands captured in award-winning photographs and artworks are on display at the Hunter Wetlands Centre at Shortland in Newcastle until mid-August 2008.
Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) Hugh Robertson, said the works are the result of the WetlandCare National Art Competition "Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People", to promote conservation and sustainable use of our important wetlands.
"It is great to see some outstanding images of coastal and inland wetlands in photographs and artworks in the categories from junior to open ages," Hugh said.
"The exhibition provides an opportunity to link art with the environment and raise awareness with both children and adults about water issues," he said.
"It is an often forgotten fact that wetlands play a critical role in a healthy environment."
"Wetlands are a major feature of the Hunter region which includes the internationally significant wetlands of the Hunter estuary and Myall Lakes systems."
"They maintain the water quality of our rivers and estuaries and protect downstream areas from flooding, while providing rich habitat for an incredibly diverse range of plant and animal species."
"The WetlandCare Australia's National Art Competition celebrates World Wetlands Day each February, assisted by sponsorship from many organisations including the DECC."
"I am also pleased to announce that DECC will continue as a major sponsor of the 2009 competition."
