NPWS hazard reduction burn in Lane Cove National Park today

Media release: 6 November 2008

The National Parks and Wildlife Service will conduct a four hectare hazard reduction burn in West Killara today with assistance from the NSW Fire Brigades.

Sydney North Regional Manager Chris McIntosh said the operation on the southern side of Lady Game Drive in Lane Cove National Park will help to protect properties behind Blaxland Road.

"This hazard reduction burn is designed to reduce fuel loads and to help protect assets such as roads and private property adjacent to the National Park in the lead up to the summer bushfire season," Mr McIntosh said.

"We realise that there may be a lot of smoke in the area while this burn is carried out and we are asking residents to be patient while the hazard reduction program is underway."

"We only have a small window of opportunity to conduct hazard reduction burns as they are extremely weather dependent - and can only be done if fuel moisture, wind and temperatures make it safe and possible."

"All of these elements including today’s weather forecast are within safe limits for today's hazard reduction burn."

Mr McIntosh said that people with asthma or those more susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the immediate area or stay indoors.

"To minimise smoke disruption to homes, residents are advised to close windows and doors, cover swimming pools and place any plastic furniture undercover," he said.

"People who live adjacent to the burn areas are also asked to remove any flammable material around their properties."
