A step back in time at Nocoleche
Media release: 22 June 2009
Community members are being encouraged to help the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to bring together the history of Nocoleche.
NPWS Bourke Area Manager, Nerida Green said the NPWS is hoping to gather lots of photos capturing the history of Nocoleche to be shared with the whole community at the anniversary celebrations.
"September 21 2009 marks the thirty year anniversary of Nocoleche being gazetted as a nature reserve into the national parks reserve system.
"NPWS are celebrating the anniversary with a free 'Back to Nocoleche' open day for the public which will include a range of fun events," Nerida said.
"Nocoleche holds an important history; the shearers' quarters is one of its icons revealing a glimpse of the past.
"Once housing shearers after a long day mustering and shearing sheep, the shearers' quarters now provide short term unique accommodation for researchers, scientists, NPWS staff, contractors and other groups visiting Nocoleche.
"The complex was constructed with the economic boom in the 1950s when the reserve was known as Nocoleche Station.
"The complex, largely unchanged from its original state, is made up of an overseer's cottage, a 12 room shearers' quarters, a store and cook's room.
"If community members could bring their photos into the NPWS office in Bourke we will scan the photos and give them back to you," Nerida said.
NPWS staff will also be taking a scanner to the celebrations and also documenting any stories you would like to share. For further information please contact Melissa Hull on (02) 6872 2744.
