Parks Week at Yarrangobilly Caves offers experiences to remember

Media release: 25 February 2013

Come to Yarrangobilly Caves in Kosciuszko National Park on Sunday, March 3, to search out fairies, inspect innovative power systems, share an award winning Aboriginal Discovery experience, and much more.

Events are scheduled between 11am and 3pm. Tours of the newly renovated section of Caves House will be popular, as will Devonshire teas in its Blue Room and on the verandah.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Yarrangobilly Caves Manager George Bradford said two very special events for children would debut on Sunday.

“NPWS geologist Monica will lead a tour specifically for children to educate them about our caves and other geological formations. Monica invites everyone to bring rocks and fossils on the day, and she’ll be happy to help identify them.

“Also, Sue will lead the second children’s activity, a tour of Jillabenan Cave where we know that fairies dwell and now we’re out to find them. There will also be a prize for the best dressed fairy on the day.”

George will lead tours of Caves House and said all tours could be booked through the Yarrangobilly Visitors Centre. To check times and costs call 6454 9597.

“Engineering and energy buffs will enjoy our behind-the-scenes tour which includes our modernised 1936 hydro electric setup, new low-energy cave lighting, and innovative water reuse including an impressive native plant nursery,” George said.

“Our Aboriginal Discovery program is nationally recognised and Rangers Shane and Talea involve the whole family in story telling, painting, boomerang and spear throwing, Didjeridu playing, rope making, bush tucker and more.”

This fabulous community day at Yarrangobilly Caves is among more than 30 activities occurring in national parks across the state to celebrate Parks Week from March 2. It’s a Trans-Tasman celebration aimed at encouraging people in Australia and New Zealand to explore national parks.
