Free Narran Lake Open Day

Media release: 6 May 2014

The wild wonders of Narran Lake Nature Reserve, will be opened to the public for the first time over May 24 and 25 as the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Narran Lake Co-management Committee holds a special free open weekend.

Ranger Michael Mulholland said the weekend coincides with Sorry Day and will be a celebration of the rich Aboriginal cultural heritage of the area, renowned for its wildlife.

“Narran Lake Nature Reserve is not just about the birds.

“It has a rich historical and contemporary Aboriginal cultural heritage.

“The Narran Lake Co-management Committee wants to share some of this heritage with the wider community who don’t normally get to access the area.

“The lakes are currently dry so there won’t be any waterbirds on show, but that certainly doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see.

“The nature reserve will be open over both Saturday and Sunday (24 and 25 May) and the new Yuwaalayaay Visitor Area and short walks will be ready for you to explore and discover.

“Bird lovers can still encounter plenty of woodland and semi-arid species, while the rich vibrant traditions of the local people will surprise and delight you.

“Clear Lake, Back Lake, Salt Lake and the Lumeah Lunnettes, take on a whole new persona when dry, providing plenty of easy walking opportunities.

“A free bush tucker BBQ and drinks will be provided for pre-bookings so if you’re planning on coming out please let us know.

“Through an appreciation of the natural environment and the areas rich cultural heritage, we hope visitors will leave the area having a greater appreciation for the local culture and customs as well as a greater knowledge of the flora and fauna that Narran Lake Nature Reserve seeks to conserve for future generations,” Mr Mulholland said.

The open weekend will be held from 24th Saturday and 25th Sunday of May 2014 from 9:00am- 8:00 pm daily. Please call in advance for guided tours and to ensure we cater for everyone.
