Third annual Bullocks Hill campsite working bee in Kosciuszko delivers

Media release: 10 October 2014

Parks staff and Kosciuszko Brumby and Horse Camp Conservationists’ (KBHCC) volunteers recently held their third annual working bee to improve the Bullocks Hill and Ghost Gully campgrounds and horse yards. Visitors will now find it better than ever.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Ranger Megan Bowden thanked staff and volunteers for their efforts.

“There were no complaints from NPWS staff as they welded posts and bore through rock with augers. We had a sunny day this year, which is unlike our previous working bees where we endured mountain weather with wind, snow and rain.

“Our fantastic volunteers did many jobs, including fitting sleepers for the loading ramp at Bullocks Hill and planting trees for shade and to make a dust screen from Port Phillip Trail at Ghost Gully campground.”

Ms Bowden said future plans at the sites included more drainage works, hardening the nearby water crossing and conducting additional rabbit control. Further improvements are also planned for Long Plain and Rocky Plain campgrounds, including new loading ramps.

Bullocks Hill campground is north of Kiandra and offers a good base for rides to Gooandra, Witses Hut, Hains Hut on the Murrumbidgee River, and Kiandra. Ms Bowden said it offered stunning views from the peaks.

“The campground is on top of a hill so it can get windy, but its proximity to the Snowy Mountains highway makes it popular for day riders when the weather is good,” Ms Bowden said.

“Bullocks campground is one of seven campgrounds where vehicle-based visitors can camp with horses and explore the beauty of northern Kosciuszko.

“The campground is also used by walkers, tourers and fisherman trying their luck in the Murrumbidgee and Eucumbene Rivers and their tributaries. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy it.”
