Volunteers help maintain Styles Creek Track in Morton National Park

Media release: 20 July 2015

Styles Creek Volunteers - Shoalhaven Bushwalkers, The Canberra Bushwalking Club and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) staff

Shoalhaven Bushwalkers, The Canberra Bushwalking Club and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) staff rolled up their sleeves recently to clear overgrown sections of the popular walking track from The Vines to Styles Creek in Morton National Park.

Ulladulla NPWS Ranger Rob Perry said 17 volunteers and three NPWS staff members pruned regrowth using loppers, bush saws and a small chainsaw to clear the track for walkers without damaging the natural environment.

“This beautiful walking track in the Budawang Wilderness Area received a new lease of life thanks to the dedicated and enthusiastic effort by volunteers,” Mr Perry said.

“It was a complete team effort over three days and the volunteers carefully trimmed, cleared and cleaned the five kilometre track from The Vines on the Endrick River Fire Trail to Styles Creek.

“The volunteers also pruned an overgrown side track to Hidden Valley.  The walking track to Styles Creek continues south to Mount Bibbenluke, linking up with the main east-west track from Long Gully to Wog Wog.

“Our crew was enthusiastic and morale was high over the weekend, despite the chilly winter nights at base camp and heavy track conditions from recent rain.

“In between the physical but rewarding work, the group enjoyed great views of Mount Haughton, Sturgiss Mountain, and Pigeon House Mountain Didthul in the clouds beyond.

"On behalf of NPWS, I’d like to thank this wonderful group of volunteers who selflessly gave up their time so all park users could have an improved and safer experience.”

Morton National Park is located 40 kilometres west of Nowra. Further information at www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/Morton-National-Park.
