Macquarie Marshes Open Weekend: walks, tours and art

Media release: 24 September 2014

This October long weekend offers a rare chance to explore the Macquarie Marshes north of Warren on guided walks and talks will be on offer with dry, wet and creative options on offer.

National Parks and Wildlife Service Ranger (NPWS) Nicola Brookhouse said the Macquarie Marshes Open Weekend was the best time to explore the internationally recognised wetland on Baradine’s doorstep.

“The marshes support over 200 bird species and over the weekend sightings of quite a few different species are possible,” Ms Brookhouse said.

“The once–a-year Open Weekend is always a popular event as people come from across the state for the chance to explore this amazing wetland and surrounding woodlands”, she said.

“The Open Weekend coincides with RiverSmarts’s Artist Muster in the Marshes and will provide a unique opportunity for artists to use the picture perfect setting in their artworks, or for visitors to see artists in action.

Other options include:

Marshes cultural walk: An Aboriginal guided walk to discover the culture of the Wailwan people and their connection to the Marshes

River red Gum/Mixed Marsh walk: a meander through the red gums to see egrets, herons and cormorants,

Woodland bird tour: dry feet guided walk to discover the woodland birds.

The Macquarie Marshes Open Weekend is on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 October.

Bookings are essential as numbers on each activity are limited.

There are also options for private property camping accommodation nearby.
