Media release: 24 November 2014

National Park as National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews are working to contain two separate fires believed to have been caused by overnight lightning strikes in southern Myall Lakes National Park.

NPWS acting Lower North Coast Region Manager Anthony Signor said Mungo Brush Road and the Myall River have both been closed to public access in a multi-agency operation also involving NSW Water Police, NSW Police, NSW Roads and Maritime Services and Great Lakes Council.

“One fire is located 2km north of the Black Oaks picnic area, and the second fire is located south of the Mungo Brush camping area”, Mr Signor said.

“Mungo Brush Road is closed between the southern entrance to Myall Lakes National Park and to Dees Corner Camping Area”, he said.

“The Myall River is closed to all boating traffic from the park boundary to Tamboy,” Mr Signor said.

“Mungo Brush and Banksia Green camping areas but at this stage campers in all other camping areas of the park are not being evacuated.”

“Two helicopters and a fixed wing aircraft are assisting with water bombing operations while ground crews are also working to control both fires, with a back burning operation planned to contain the Mungo Brush fire.”
