Great Holiday Activities at Seven Mile Beach and Minnamurra Rainforest

Media release: 21 September 2015

Would you and your kids like to discover Aboriginal culture at one of Australia’s most iconic beaches? Or discover the plants and animals of a rainforest; or make interesting art surrounded by forest?

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has these activities available during the upcoming school holiday period at Seven Mile Beach National Park and Minnamurra Rainforest.

Acting Head of NPWS, Mark Peacock wants to encourage families to get outdoors these school holidays by visiting a national park to enjoy Australia’s native animals, plants and coast lines.

“The Boomerangs at Seven Mile Beach tour on Thursday 1 October from 11am to 12.30pm enables kids and their parents to learn about Aboriginal culture on beautiful Seven Mile Beach, between Kiama and Nowra. Get a hands-on demonstration of Koori tools and weapons from an Aboriginal NPWS Discovery ranger,” said Mr Peacock.

“Seven Mile Beach National Park offers a great day out for the whole family between Kianna and Nowra. Activities include fishing, swimming, picnicking and walking options for everyone. There is also plenty of parking with surroundings friendly to less mobile visitors.

“The area contains a unique littoral rainforest with several rainforest plants at their southern-most limit of distribution, as well as a rich beach-dune-wetland ecosystem,”
he said.

Interested kids and their families can book a place at the NPWS South Coast Regional Centre on phone 4423 2170. The starting point for the tour is at the Beach Road picnic area at Seven Mile Beach National Park.

Cost is adults $10 per person; children $5 per person; and family $25 for 2 adults and 2 children.

“At Minnamurra Rainforest Centre Meet the Ranger tours commence every half hour between 10.30am and 1pm (last tour) on Saturday 26 September and 3 October, and Wednesday 23 and 30 September. No bookings are necessary – just come to the Visitor’s Centre,” Mr Peacock said.

“This 20 minute tour explores the Minnamurra Rainforest in Budderoo National Park to learn about its mysterious secrets, and discover the creatures that live in the rainforest.

“The Wild at Art Tour on Sunday 3 October from 2pm to 4pm is a chance for your kids to get creative and make a work of art to call their own based on the rainforest surroundings.

“Kids will meet at the Minnamurra Visitor’s Centre to hear, smell, and experience the incredible beauty of the rainforest, and be inspired like never before to get crafty. All materials will be provided,” he said.

Bookings will be accepted for this tour by telephoning the Minnamurra Rainforest Visitor Centre on 42360469 (press option 3).

For the Meet the Ranger tours, adults and children are $5 per person, with a family group $10 (of up to five people). For the Wild at Art tour it is $10 per child with accompanying adults free.
