General information

Cycling, or even car touring, along this track is a great way to enliven the senses and get a feel for the vast desert of Mungo National Park in the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area. Starting at Mungo Visitor Centre, you’ll cycle past dunes and wide open skies with the chance to do some birdwatching, spot wildlife and visit historic Zanci Homestead.

A perfect early morning or sunset adventure, you'll be adding your tracks to a landscape that includes some of the oldest evidence of human and animal life in the world. You might have a cycling race with a Richard's pipit, see a flock of pink cockatoos, or spot an eagle’s nest among the branches of the nearby belah trees.

After an exhilarating ride, stop for a picnic at Mungo Woolshed. If you’ve still got energy to burn, you can cycle Mungo Self-guided Drive tour or just jump in the car.

You will travel over some gentle sand dunes and open plains on this tour. The route follows the road, taking a round trip across the lake floor to the Walls of China, then over the dune to the mallee country and around the north-east shore of the lake.

You'll find good shaded sections and rest areas along the way and a campground (Belah Camp) is located at the halfway point.

Make sure you carry water at all times and please note that cycles are only permitted on formed roads open to the public.

General information

Mungo Self-guided Drive tour, also known as Mungo loop track, is a brilliant introduction to the awe-inspiring desert landscape and a chance to experience the historic significance of Mungo National Park in comfort. Crossing the ancient lake-bed to the Walls of China, the route takes in the iconic dunes and mallee country of outback NSW, before tracing the north-east shores of the lake.

To get the most of your outback tour, drop by Mungo Visitor Centre and pick up ‘Driving the Mungo Story’. Stretch your legs at Walls boardwalk and then continue by road onto Redtop Drive to Red Top lookout, where you can walk the boardwalk overlooking the dunes.

Take a short walk on Mallee Stop walking track and pull up for a bite at Rosewood or Round Tank picnic areas to break up the drive. The last stop on the drive before picking up Zanci Pastoral loop is Vigars Well. Vigars Well dates back to the earlier settlers and from here, there’s access to the mobile dunes overlooking the majestic Mungo dry lakes. For an extra challenge, try cycling the track by mountain bike.

Emus and western red kangaroos are often seen bounding through the mallee scrub, and the park is home to numerous birds of prey. Keep your eyes peeled for the whistling kite, wedge-tailed eagle and brown goshawk.
