The rear entrance to the woolshed is wheelchair-accessible, and you’ll have no problem taking a self-guided tour, provided you choose the gates carefully.
Stroll through the historic Mungo Woolshed and associated yards and admire the craftsmanship, ingenuity and sweat of the early European settlers and Chinese labourers.
The building was constructed in about 1869 of locally harvested cypress pine using a drop-log construction. Read about the history of the shed's use.

Mungo is one of a handful of places where you can see the extraordinary effects of erosion on the landscape.
Red Top lookout is an unbeatable vantage point, offering bird's eye views of the park's remarkable deep ravines, rippling patterns and rich textures.
It's an easy half-hour drive to the lookout from the Mungo Visitor Centre carpark. Along the way, you'll find signs discussing the long-term climate changes that led to the lakes in Mungo National Park drying out. Plus, there are even more attention-grabbing views, so don't forget your camera.

Mallee Stop walking track
Wheelchair access: medium
- Assistance may be required to access this area
- Some rough sandy sections make this trail challenging, but not impassable, with some assistance
The Mallee Stop walking track offers a fascinating introduction to the breathtaking scenic contrasts of outback NSW. Wander through an environment that is at once harsh and beautiful; the ground like a moonscape but brimming with plant life; the red earth stark against an impossibly blue sky.
Pack a picnic lunch and set out from Mallee Stop, positioned on the eastern side of Lake Mungo (on the Mungo track). Be a part of Mungo’s history and add your footprints to the sand as you tread this flat track through the heart of mallee country. You’ll loop through an area of mallee eucalypts, then head over a low dune studded with pointy spinifex grass. The track also features signs explaining the diversity of the mallee species encountered, as well as other equally significant plants and Mungo’s fauna.
When you return to Mallee Stop, pull out that picnic and relax in the peaceful surroundings. You may even see a kangaroo or two bounding by.
Plant communities: semi-arid woodlands

The vast desert wilderness of Mungo National Park hums with life, and this short, easy track will delight and awe in equal measure. Foreshore walk
With its exquisitely sculpted sand dunes, hardy, gnarled trees, grassy woodlands and age-old lakebeds, the Foreshore walk incorporates the natural wonders that probably first inspired you to visit Mungo National Park.
Beginning behind The Meeting Place, near the Mungo Woolshed, this easy walk leads you across the bluebush-covered shoreline of ancient Lake Mungo. Follow the markers up the western shore’s extraordinary red dune to behold the last of a once-extensive forest of mallee and white cypress pines.
After pausing a moment in the pines’ welcome shade, you can extend your walk by continuing along the Zanci Pastoral Heritage Loop. Otherwise, follow the track back to the Meeting Place where you can stop for a picnic and be astounded by the replicas of ancient human footprints.
As you take this walk, see if you can work out what the pink cockatoos eat and where the kangaroos shelter from the heat. And don’t forget to read the explanatory signs as you go. These offer valuable information on the park’s plants, wildlife, landscape and conservation
