Search for the Castaways of Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie locals involved in the 1973 filming of the ABC TV series ‘Castaway’ have a chance to celebrate this iconic period drama as part of History Week (2 - 10 September).

Sea Acres Rainforest Centre manager Natalie Talbot said a reunion of cast, crew and anyone interested in this little-known part of local history is planned for Saturday 2 September 2017.

“It’s highly likely that individuals involved in the original production, or those that helped the film crew and actors, are still in the Port Macquarie area,” Ms Talbot said.

“We would like to hear from as many of those involved in the original 1973 filming interested in getting involved in celebration events that revisit the legacy of the Port Macquarie filming.

“The 1973 filming of ‘Castaway’ was a significant historical event for Port Macquarie. Thirteen episodes were filmed by the Anglo-German production company ‘Castaway Productions’, and the first episode aired in Australia in 1974.

“Most episodes were filmed at Miners Beach but the filming of a simulated storm scene was filmed at Town Beach.

“We would like to invite all those who took part to a day of reunion events including a tour of original film site locations, a session with locals and special guests and an evening screening of a selection of episodes from the ‘Castaway’ series.

“It’s timely to undertake this venture as the theme for History Week this year is popular culture.

Seeking to examine and understand Australian popular culture and reflect how this culture has changed over time, whether it be music, theatre, film, TV, sport or fashion,” said Ms Talbot.
