Supporting Aboriginal Connection to Country

Aboriginal connection to land has cultural significance and a role in the spiritual, cultural and economic wellbeing of Aboriginal communities in NSW. Collective identity of Aboriginal communities is also linked to place - the community itself is part of Country as well as each person in it. There are recognised community and individual benefits to wellbeing from involvement in caring for Country.

The NSW Government, led by OEH, is currently working with Aboriginal communities to reduce barriers to Aboriginal connections to Country and develop whole-of-government approaches to land access, cultural connection and employment on Country issues.

Through this process, the Government is finding out about the Aboriginal community's views on its access to and use of public lands, as well as how the community can be more involved in their management. The Government is also interested in hearing what the community thinks about the services its agencies provide to Aboriginal landowners.

Most importantly, the aim is to reach a common understanding between the Government and Aboriginal communities about the programs and initiatives that will help strengthen connections to Country.

Aboriginal Land Management Information Guides

Following feedback from Aboriginal communities about difficulties in finding and accessing NSW government information about the high cultural value to Aboriginal communities of involvement with land and environmental management and related land management options, three Aboriginal Land Management Information Guides have been developed by the Country, Culture and Heritage Division in OEH to outline the range and type of government programs available in this area.

The guides provide information about conserving Aboriginal culture and heritage when managing land in NSW for:

  • Aboriginal landholders;
  • other private landholders; and
  • Aboriginal communities and public land managers looking at Aboriginal access to public land.
