Draft Wild Horse Management Plan for the Warragamba Special Area - Blue Mountains National Park

November 2006

The Warragamba Special Area surrounds and protects the water storage facility of Lake Burragorang, Sydney's primary water source. The area is home to

  • 24 threatened animal species and
  • 21 threatened plant species.
Introduced plants and animals in the area, including horses, have a significant impact on these natural values and need to be managed.

In recognition of the considerable community interest in the park's horses, DEC formed the Warragamba Wild Horse Management Steering Committee in 2004 and commenced the development of a management plan for horses in the Warragamba Special Area. The draft plan draws on the knowledge, experience and skills of the steering committee in developing agreed methods and techniques for the humane capture and removal of these horses.
