Project achievements - Garie Beach Surf Safety Centre, Royal National Park
What the project is achieving
The construction of the Garie Beach Surf Safety Centre is one component of a larger planning and construction program to improve the Garie Beach Valley for the enjoyment of beach users. Stage one of the program was completed in June 2005 and included constructing a 175-space car park, and restoring the creek line and the beach foredune.

Community engagement
The Garie Surf Life Saving Club and Surf Lifesaving NSW have been valuable partners in the design and development of the surf centre throughout the project's development. The broader community that uses the beach has also shown a high level of interest and a local community stakeholder group was formed to help represent community views. The stakeholder group included representatives from the Garie Board Riders Club, National Parks Association, Youth Hostels Australia, Royal National Park Environmental Education Centre, Bundeena Progress Association and local Landcare and bushwalking groups.
Dedicated volunteer Landcare groups continue to help with the project by planting hundreds of local endemic plants in the valley.
The project continues to receive media coverage in the local press, including a front-page story in the Sutherland Shire and St George Leader announcing the commencement of construction of the centre.
